Canelo Alvarez has entered the twilight years of his boxing career. At 33, he might only have a couple of years left in his gas tank to walk into the squared circle and put on a show for the fans. But what does the Mexican champion think about hanging gloves? Has he decided on a timeline?

The super middleweight champion is slated to fight Jaime Munguia on May 4 as he prepares for his title defense. While he has his work cut out, it’s not a position he hasn’t been in before. With 64 fights under his belt, a pro career spanning 18 years, and multiple gold straps in 4 weight divisions, he has nothing left to prove. So, where is Alvarez’s career headed now?

Alvarez, at 60-2-2, when asked how much time he has left in boxing, gave an amusing answer. He referenced his rival, Floyd Mayweather, who handed him the first defeat of his career in 2013. He said, “A lot, I feel in my prime. Like Floyd Mayweather said – young, fresh, rich, and handsome.”

While the Mexican fighter has dodged the impending question this time, he has previously given his retirement timeline. Last year, in a conversation with The Breakfast Club, he maintained that he had 4-5 years left in him. He admitted, “I think I at least have four more years in me, maybe five… I always said I would retire when I was 36 or 37, around that age. That should be more than enough.”

Notably, Alvarez had turned pro at 15 and carved out a reputation for knocking out older opponents, a theme he continued throughout his early career. After spending close to two decades inside the boxing ring, he would prefer to spend some time with his family. However, you might see the Guadalajara native stroll around a field of green with a golf club in his hands after hanging up his boxing gloves.

Alvarez’s love for golf is no secret. He has made several appearances in celebrity and amateur tournaments and has devoured many hours in a day playing golf. That didn’t come without criticism, as Oscar De La Hoya saw it as a distraction and possibly a reason he dropped the fight to Dmitry Bivol. Amusingly, he previously stated his desire to go on PGA tours, but he doesn’t plan on pursuing gold professionally.

He told Boxing Scene, “No. I just want to play tournaments for fun. I really enjoy golf. But to be a golfer, you need to start really young. I need to be true with myself. I’m going to enjoy golf a lot.”

The fans will flock to the arena as they don’t want to miss the opportunity to witness Alvarez exchanging punches live. The fans don’t know when he’ll call it quits, but they should enjoy watching him while he is in the boxing ring.
