Millions of boxing fans and followers heaved a big sigh of relief as they heard the news of Canelo Alvarez‘s next fight. On Cinco de Mayo weekend, May 4, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the P4P megastar will face Jaime Munguia in a 12-round blockbuster for the undisputed super-middleweight championship of the world. On Tuesday, March 19, the two boxers will face each other for the first time during the kick-off press conference.

They will meet at the Crystal Ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel in Las Vegas at 5 p.m. Eastern Time or 2 p.m. Pacific Time. According to the available information, the presser will be streamed live on YouTube for fans and followers to watch. After thwarting archrival Gennady Golovkin‘s attempt to snatch it away in 2022, he defended it successfully against John Ryder and then Jermell Charlo.

27-year-old Munguia, on the other hand, had been equally active in the ring. After securing the vacant WBC silver super middleweight title from Sergiy Derevyanchenko on June 10, he knocked out John Ryder during the first title defense.

This event followed months of discussions and speculation regarding Alvarez’s prospective opponent. A catalog of names literally passed before the undisputed champion finally settled for a face-off against another Mexican. Canelo said, “I’m very proud and excited to be able to make this fight. A Mexican versus another Mexican is always a huge fight and it’s been a while since there’s been one like this. It’s great to give an opportunity like this to a fighter that’s earned it like Jaime has. It gives me a lot of joy that two Mexicans will be facing each other in such a big fight for the sport.”

Munguia was no less excited, he said, “I’m very, very happy and filled with enthusiasm for this great opportunity. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone involved who were able to make this fight a reality. We are ready to give fans a great night of boxing on Saturday, May 4. I can’t wait to demonstrate to the world that I am capable of doing great things. Viva Tijuana and Viva Mexico!”

The all-Mexican clash promises an aggressive, no-quarters-given spectacle that is sure to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. A win over Alvarez, besides shocking the boxing world, will make Munguia a two-division world champion.

Both Amazon Prime and DAZN will air the May 4 PBC pay-per-view gala. The Alvarez-Munguia fight would be the first time two Mexicans would fight for a title beyond the middle division. The former WBO light middleweight champion seemingly left behind Matchroom’s Edgar Berlanga in the final race to stand opposite Canelo Alvarez. There were other contenders too who lost out.

Perhaps the fight most boxing fans wanted to see remained the Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez square-up. The latter even succeeded in becoming the WBC mandatory challenger. But sadly, to no avail. Eventually, ‘The Mexican Monster moved up a division to stake a claim at the interim light heavyweight title. Welterweight champion Terence Crawford also seemed keen on a fight with Canelo Alvarez. However, the 3-division difference apparently proved a big dampener.

There were even talks of a fight with Jermall Charlo. However, over time, it fizzled out. As of now, there’s little information available on the undercard fights for the May 4 show.
