Mexico, the United States, and now, Saudi Arabia. Having already left his mark in the first two, Canelo Alvarez is now set to cement his legacy in the Middle East. So, is there a chance we’ll see Canelo step into boxing’s traditional home, England? On May 3, in what marks his first attempt to reclaim the undisputed title he lost last year, the Mexican icon will face William Scull.
Ahead of the fight, a few reporters caught up with the Mexican superstar to get his thoughts on a potential bout across the pond. Now, Canelo’s not one to rush decisions. However, if the right conditions are met, he just might be open to the idea. But that naturally raises the question. Who could his next opponent be? Given their electrifying performance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend, both Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn have emerged as realistic contenders. In fact, Eubank Jr.’s name had already been floated as a possible Canelo opponent last year. When asked, the former undisputed champ kept things simple: “Whatever is good.”

Canelo Alvarez: A fight in England? Let’s bring it on!
Seconds Out shared footage of Canelo calmly fielding questions from reporters. Cool, composed, and friendly as ever, the world champion responded with his trademark smile. The first question? His reaction to William Scull’s bold claim that he plans to ‘eat’ Canelo in the ring. Alvarez swiftly dismissed the jab, responding, “He’s going to eat punches; that’s what he’s going to eat.” When another reporter asked about the recent announcement of his former opponent, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., facing Jake Paul, Canelo said, “I support, obviously, Julio César Chávez Jr., and I hope he wins. He prepares himself really good and takes care seriously.”

Finally, a reporter asked, “You said that you like to fight in England; which stadium would you like to fight in England, and in a dream situation, who?” Canelo Alvarez replied that Wembley Stadium is one of his favorite venues. As for his potential opponent, he seemed uncertain, stating, “But I think the best you have in England?”
So the reporter pressed further, asking, “Eubank or Benn?” This time, Canelo turned the question back on him: “What do you prefer?” However, he quickly added, “Whatever, I don’t know who, but whatever it is, it’s good for the fighting. England will be my pleasure to fight.”
But how attainable is it?
Fans may remember that last year, after his win over Kamil Szeremeta on the Beterbiev-Bivol card, Chris Eubank Jr. spoke to Sky Sports about a potential matchup with Canelo: “Me and Canelo would be a hell of a build-up. Two very different personalities, very different backgrounds. That would be a lot of fun. It will be a lot of fun.” Unfortunately, the fight never went beyond mere talk.

Eubank Jr. remains optimistic, however. Recently, he told Ariel Helwani that a win over Conor Benn could lead him to a Canelo showdown. “I do think that is the next logical fight. Turki is saying this could put me in a position to get in the ring with Canelo, which would be amazing,” he said.
Canelo’s response has likely made many British boxing fans’ hearts skip a beat. Just imagine Canelo Alvarez, the biggest name in boxing, headlining an event at Wembley Stadium. But fans should also take this with a grain of salt.

After his fight with Scull, one he’s expected to win with relative ease, Canelo will head to Las Vegas in September to face Terence Crawford. That will wrap up the first leg of his four-fight deal with the Riyadh Season. He still has two more fights to fulfill his contract. The rematch against Dmitry Bivol and the highly anticipated showdown with David Benavidez have already been making headlines. So it seems unlikely that a Wembley fight will come to fruition anytime soon.
What’s your take? Do you think Canelo will ever get his dream fight at Wembley? If so, when and against whom? Let us know.
