David Benavidez Gets a Step Closer to Canelo Alvarez Fight by Annihilating David Lemieux to Win via TKO in Round Three

The stage at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, was immolated by the sensational showdown of behemoths. Two-time WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez faced the Canadian nightmare, David Lemieux, for the vacant WBC interim super middleweight title.
In fact, the bout was a gift to boxing fans with a true display of sheer power.

Benavidez came into the bout with an impressive winning streak of 25-0-0 (22 KOs). In his last in-ring outing in November 2021, ‘El Bandera Roja’ beat Kyrone Davis via TKO. The 25-year-old followed up that round 7 finish, with an even quicker one against David Lemieux (43-4-0).

Benavidez started strong in the first round, landing multiple body shots. However, towards the end of round one, he unleashed his inner beast.

He took Lemieux to the ropes and unleashed a brutal barrage of combinations, almost ending the fight. Lemieux was literally saved by the bell in the very first round.

The second round was a display of Benavidez’s sheer power. In fact, he downed ‘The Demolisher’ within seconds of the second round. However, Lemieux recovered and continued the bout. Benavidez’s immaculate defense prevented the Canadian from gaining the upper hand. Lemieux, on the other hand, was subject to some unforgiving punishment from ‘El Bandera Roja’

Lemieux’s sheer willpower brought him back for the third round, but that just delayed the inevitable. As his injuries started piling up, the referee ended the fight via corner stoppage and awarded Benavidez his twenty-sixth win.

Benavidez is now the WBC interim super middleweight champion. And, Canelo Alvarez is the undisputed WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF super middleweight champion. This, in fact, makes Benavidez a challenger for Alvarez’s WBC super-middleweight belt.
However, it is worth noting that since Alvarez lost to Bivol, he might be more interested in avenging his loss than defending his title.
