On the 27th of January, John Ryder will challenge Jaime Munguia for the latter’s WBC Silver Super Middleweight Championship title. Although David Benavidez’s father feels John Ryder vs. Jaime Munguia is a fifty-fifty fight, he has reasons to expect a potential upset. Even though Munguia, 27, is undefeated, Jose Benavidez Sr. believes Ryder has the skillset and experience to win. On that note, one being asked about the potential outcome of Ryder vs. Munguia, Benavidez Sr. said, “That’s a fifty-fifty fight in my opinion. I think we might have an upset.

Meanwhile, Benavidez Sr. also emphasized the fact that Ryder went the distance of 12 rounds with Canelo Alvarez last year. “Ryder has a heart, man. He’s a 168. A true 168. And he can take a punch. He survived that with Canelo. So, don’t be surprised if he wins,” he added.

Additionally, since John Ryder recently expressed his desire to fight David Benavidez, Benavidez Sr. hoped Ryder would pass his test against Munguia with flying colors. “I’m going for Ryder to win because if he wins, if he beats Munguia, then he wants to fight David Benavidez. So, I’m cheering for him to win. So that we can make that fight happen,” he concluded.

Ryder thinks Benavidez’s punches do not possess power

While Benavidez Sr. lauded ‘The Gorilla’, John Ryder earlier spotted flaws in David Benavidez’s boxing. In his opinion, Benavidez is too huge for 168 lbs. Likewise, Ryder feels that by fighting at 168 lbs, David compromises his power. “Benavidez is massive at the weight, huge at the weight. I think he takes something out of himself to make that weight. I don’t think his punch power is potentially there,” Ryder told Boxing Social.

For the same reason, John Ryder, who hopes to rematch Canelo Alvarez, believes the Undisputed Super-Middleweight champion can potentially beat David Benavidez. “It’ll be a tough fight for Canelo, but he’s very evasive and very tactical. He knows what he wants to throw when he wants to throw it,” Ryder added. Well, looks like Ryder has already studied David Benavidez well. Likewise, should the duo share the ring, it will be an interesting fight. Anyway, do you think Ryder will upset Munguia? Let us know in the comments below.

I feel combat sport is a representation of life inside a cage or ring. There is fear, struggle, and the will to be free. It has a poetic quality.
