Last night was monumental for Jack Catterall. Through a unanimous decision, the fighter rose to victory against Jorge Linares in England’s Liverpool. The fight reached a nail-biting climax in the fifth round when he stunned Linares with a left hand. However, soon the opponent recuperated in a resistance that ruled out the idea of a knockdown for the remaining rounds.

When the fight elapsed, a resounding victory came Catterall’s way as the judges scored 117-111 116-112, and 116-112, all in his favor. The victory was much needed at this stage in his boxing career, as the fighter had just ended his 15-month lay-off in May this year. The Linares fight was crucial as it posed to be his ticket to the big fights. Now the prospects were open to him, his biggest foe came with claws out in criticism of him.

The tensions between the two fighters seem to not simmer anytime soon. As ‘El Gato’ Catterall rose to victory, he called out his old rival, Taylor, for a rematch that the boxing realm has been desperately asking for. He said, “Taylor, where are you? Let’s have it, you sh*thouse.” Not in attendance at the arena, the response from Taylor came in on X (formerly Twitter). Taylor posted, 38-year-old, lost his last 4 fights, couldn’t finish Darragh Foley but, it’s a great win!…Couldn’t finish a Sunday Roast.”

The beef between them dates back to February last year when Taylor gave El Gato a loss he could never forget. At the undisputed 140-pound championship, ‘The Tartan Tornado’ won through a split decision after the 12-rounds took their course. However, the majority of the realm resounded in favor of Catterall, claiming that he deserved the win.

In the wake of one of the most controversial verdicts in British boxing, there were calls for a rematch between them. Multiple negotiations that took place only resulted in postponements. Finally, this led to the collapse of the idea itself. But now, with the calls by Gato himself, the fight does seem plausible.

Eddie Hearn making the ‘right fight’

Promoter Eddie Hearn has officially confirmed that discussions are on the horizon for a rematch between the two rivals. Originally slated for a rematch in March, it collapsed after Taylor incurred a severe injury. Highlighting the animosity between the two fighters, the promoter stated that they “cannot stand each other.” He believes that Taylor’s provocative nature will bring out the best in Catterall, who is noted for his composure. He also suggested that the rematch could take place in either Manchester or Glasgow.

Hearn highlighted the recent success of British fights and stated that a rematch between Taylor and Catterall is the logical choice for both fighters. He stated that a rematch between Taylor and Catterall is the logical choice for both fighters. He pointed out that although every boxer aims for a world title, Catterall, in particular, deserves a rematch due to the intense animosity and public interest surrounding their rivalry.

Ever since his initial bout, Josh Taylor has lost only once to Teofimo Lopez in June. While Catterall stands poised for a world title shot against the winner of the December clash between WBC-belt holder Regis Prograis and Devin Haney, he has also expressed a strong desire to settle the score with Taylor. Taylor, on the other hand, ridiculed Catterall’s performance against Linares on social media, stoking the flames of their rivalry.
