What prompted Floyd Mayweather to retire? In 2017, when the 50-0 undefeated fighter hung his gloves, he left behind a legacy that today serves as an inspiration for young fighters. However, as per Bill Haney, the trainer and father of Devin Haney, his son, one from the younger lot was the reason why Mayweather decided to drop curtains on his illustrious career.

In the days leading to Devin Haney’s fight against Ryan Garcia, footage was leaked by Garcia. In it, a young Devin Haney can be seen losing a sparring session to Gervonta Davis. The footage that was taken in Mayweather’s gym sparked immediate controversy and angered the father-son duo. In retaliation, Bill Haney alleged that it was a sparring session with a young Devin Haney that prompted Floyd Mayweather to consider retirement. Soon after this turned into a beef where Floyd Mayweather seemingly sided with Ryan Garcia and Bill Haney kept hitting out at Mayweather for what appeared a betrayal to the senior Haney given his long history with Devin Haney. Now after the Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney matchup, Floyd appears to have had the last laugh. This prompted an online confrontation between Bill Haney and Floyd Mayweather that has caused all hell to break loose.

On a recent Instagram Live, the two of them shared some bitter words. At one point, Bill Haney claimed that his son defeated everyone in sparring, including Mayweather, when they stepped inside the ring against Devin. This prompted the 47-year-old to respond. He replied, “But I am undefeated under the lights. Is your fighter undefeated under the lights?” In response, Haney Sr. took digs at Mayweather’s record, underscoring that he undertook only easy fights in his career.

He remarked, “You’re a bulls***-ass n***a… F*** your 50-0, that s*** don’t mean nothing…Look at the opponents you picked, it means nothing.” However, Floyd continued, “Bill you know I have always had respect for you. I just called to find out what your problem is with me.” As Bill Haney declared that he would stand by his WBC champion son, Mayweather asked if the duo needed his help.

He quipped, “You need some help? He needed help the other night.” This angered Bill Haney, who responded, “My son needs me tomorrow, today and every day. We don’t need you for dog s***.” Was Mayweather being condescending about lending a helping hand to Devin Haney, or does he genuinely still care about the young fighter?

However, their argument did not settle the contentious beef that arose from the serious claims Bill Haney had made earlier about their alleged sparring before the Conor McGregor fight.

Why Devin Haney beat Floyd Mayweather while sparring?

Bill Haney was not at all in approval of the sparring video Ryan Garcia leaked of his son. Why would he be? It showed his son in a spot that is not for champions. To project his disappointment, he called Mayweather out. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, he noted at the time, “Floyd, he could have stopped [before fighting Conor McGregor in 2017], so we should have shown the sparring video of him and Devin. Now, why do all videos show the sparring [with Gervonta Davis] wasn’t close? It was like Floyd looked in the mirror when I told him.”

“He finally decided he could no longer be in the boxing with no real fighters. Devin is the one who showed (Mayweather) he was past it. He (Mayweather) knew that the torch had to be passed. I mean, he passed it to Devin because it was either that or we would be challenging him,” he revealed.

In an early interview with Fight Hype, Money had spoken vividly of the time he sparred with Devin Haney about his sparring during the Conor McGregor fight camp. He accepted that he had lost the sparring to the young Devin Haney. However, Floyd went on to state that sparring is a place to make mistakes and the wins in the gym do not really count. He added that those mistakes are the reason that he is very knowledgeable in the sport. But drawing insights from that 4-round session, he also called Devin Haney a “sharp skills, great boxer.”

However, this wasn’t the first time. Floyd Mayweather had admitted publicly many times before that Devin Haney would one day become the next face of boxing. That was until Ryan Garcia started hanging out with Floyd Mayweather, following which came the sparring clip leak. Since then, things have never been the same between the Haneys and Floyd Mayweather.

In an X post, he expressed his anger toward the former welterweight champion. He stated, “Floyd has been hating a long time. This ain’t just starting. I held my tongue for years because I respect the greats of the sport. But dude is a bonafide hater that doesn’t wanna see nobody win if he’s not a part of it! “

I know he sent Ryan the sparring [footage] … I know he gave Ryan those ‘pimp’ comments to say [at the press conference]. Miserable old man tried to [originally] stop the fight. Alhamdulillah I’m happy he revealed himself to the world,” Haney further said.

It remains to be seen what new angle this entire fiasco takes henceforth. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments section below.
