A soccer star vs. a YouTube star. That’s what has the fans buzzing. The rumors of former English and Manchester United player Wayne Rooney donning boxing gloves have the boxing world buzzing. While the former soccer star has hinted towards a potential career in boxing, speculations of how he would fare against Jake Paul are already making waves. It seems Eddie Hearn already picked sides.

It all started when Rooney, keen to return to a managerial task, admitted he held talks with Misfits Boxing. But there has been no concrete development. But what if he were to exchange blows with the man who popularized crossover boxing? Surprisingly, Eddie Hearn would side with his compatriot.

The British promoter, in a conversation with DAZN, disclosed that he would pick the soccer player with no fights under his belt. For those unaware, Rooney had boxed as an amateur but gave it up in favor of a soccer career. The former D.C. United player-cum-coach would therefore break down Jake Paul at the iconic Old Trafford.

Hearn said, “He [Wayne Rooney] used to box, he was actually an amateur, he knows how to look after himself. I think he would like to have a go… [I would like to see him fight] Jake Paul. Wayne Rooney against Jake Paul. At Old Trafford. It’s a huge event, and I back Wayne Rooney to win it.”

However, the fans shouldn’t expect Rooney to fight under the Misfits banner yet, as he is focused on getting back into a managerial role in soccer. Rooney is going through a rough patch as Birmingham City sacked him after only turning in two wins throughout 15 matches. Meanwhile, Paul is hitting the mitts and breaking sweat for his next boxing fight.

‘The Problem Child’ ready for his championship road

The 27-year-old will fight an experienced Ryan Bourland in an eight-round cruiserweight fight on March 2 at El Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan. Bourland is notably a former Golden Gloves champion with an impressive record of 17-1. Besides, Paul was recently involved in a heated exchange with the former UFC champion Sean Strickland, but that never reached a tipping point.

In addition, Paul’s fight with Bourland will feature as a co-main on a card headlined by Amanda Serrano against IBF mandatory challenger Nina Meinke. Paul will look to improve his boxing record to 9-1 and inch closer to his dream of becoming a world champion.

I hail from a family of passionate sports lovers, especially combat sports. It is from there that I realized how aptly combat sports embody life. The words of Jeremy Lesniak, "It's not about learning to fight, it's about learning to be better through the expression of action" resonated with the interest I had in combat sports.
