In 2018, ahead of his second fight with Gennady Golovkin, initially scheduled for 5th May, Canelo Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol. Following this discovery and a hearing held by the Nevada Athletic Commission, Alvarez faced a six months’ ban from the sport. At this, Eddie Hearn made certain staggering statements about Saul. According to Hearn, Alvarez, who had now greatly compromised his image in the sport, deserved to be banned for a lifetime instead of only six months.

Hearn had said, “It doesn’t matter how long he’s banned for. His reputation is finished in the sport. He’s a great fighter, but who knows how long he’s been cheating for? Should he be banned longer? Yeah”

The fight with ‘GGG‘ that was initially supposed to take place on May 5th got postponed. However, Alvarez came out of his ban, and won against ‘GGG’ on September 15th, the same year. Here is what Hearn had said about Canelo and Golovkin fight and the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Eddie Hearn condemned Canelo Alvarez and felt sorry for Gennady Golovkin as Saul faced a ban

Although Hearn condemned Canelo and opined that Saul was liable to face a lifetime ban from boxing, he kept the prospect for the ‘GGG’ and Alvarez fight alive. Hearn said, “I feel sorry for him. He’s fighting on May 5th in a fight no one wants to see, but he’s got to fight. He’s got to stay active. Canelo will obviously fight Golovkin on September 15th.”

With Canelo temporarily out of the game, ‘GGG’ fought Vanes Martirosyan. Golovkin won the fight via a knockout in the second round.

Speaking of the use of PEDs, Hearn added, “Like any crime, if there’s no punishment, it’s just going to encourage people to commit them. So if you’re a young fighter and thinking of doping in the sport and you see Canelo Alvarez get a six-month suspension with no fine and penalty, ‘I’ll give it a go. I’ll run the risk.’ Maybe a life ban is what’s needed to eliminate drugs from the sport. I’m not shocked by the six-month ban. Are you asking me is it outrageous? It shows a lot about boxing”.
