Nate Jones shared during an interview that Floyd Mayweather‘s mother and his mother knew each other well from their Olympic days. In 2010, the former Olympic bronze medalist lost his mother, Christine Johnson. He recollected the day he received the call from his friend and student, Floyd The Money Mayweather. Jones spoke about how both ended up talking and crying for more than an hour. Then, the heart-rending gesture from the world champion moved the two-time National Golden Gloves winner.

Nate Jones escaped from one of the most notorious American public housing complexes. Then he went from incarceration to the Olympic podium and finally to the corner of probably the best fighter of our generation.

Floyd Mayweather calls up Nate Jones during the toughest phase of the latter’s life

It was around the time when Floyd Mayweather won a unanimous victory over Shane Mosley. A short video clip has The Money’s Atlanta Olympic teammate and now a key TMT member sharing the details of that fateful day, “…how your mom doing? I said Stones, she just left me and we cried and so for an hour and a half on the phone, and we walked. I mean, I drove my car back to Northwest Hospital I never went back I never went upstairs I couldn’t do it…”

Floyd Mayweather and Nate Jones go back to when they participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The former lost his semi-final bout to the Bulgarian Serafim Todorov. On the other hand, the latter lost his to the Canadian David Defiagbon. But the friendship forged during that era stayed put.

The Money went on to establish an unparalleled feat in boxing history. But, on the other hand, Jones had to discontinue after the 2002 loss to Lamon Brewster. Decreased reflexes and speech forced doctors to advise him of a full retirement from boxing.

However, Mayweather hadn’t forgotten his friend and got Nate, a place in his expanding team. Jones often credits Mayweather for giving him a break when he was down and low on prospects, Nate, you’re gonna be a great trainer in boxing.”

After fifty professional bouts, Floyd decided to hang up his gloves in 2017. However, come 2018, The Money took to exhibition format like a duck to water. He won all five exhibitions he has fought so far. On the other hand, Jones has weathered alongside the former champion through all famous bouts – Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, and Conor McGregor.
