Among the many boxing news stories, one that has surely captivated numerous fans is the potential match-up between Gervonta Davis and Vasyl Lomachenko. Just imagine if it were to happen—it could invoke memories of classic bouts like Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman or ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran. It’s a fight any die-hard boxing fan would eagerly anticipate. Barring the sheer technical brilliance of ‘The Matrix’, who else can match ‘Tank’s power and ring IQ?

But inevitable questions arise. ‘Loma’, despite all the intrigue surrounding the fight, is 36 years old and clearly past his prime. Could he stand up to Gervonta Davis, who is currently in his prime? If the fight materializes, how would it play out for the two-time Olympic gold medalist? Would he be able to outbox and outmaneuver the tenacious Baltimorean? There are many uncertainties. FightHype tried getting a few answers from former world champion Jorge Linares.

Remember ‘Loma’, the ‘Tank’ shoots to kill!

A reporter from the channel caught up with the retired boxer at the Teofimo Lopez–Steve Claggett headliner in Miami. The former asked, “What do you think about the rumors of him fighting Tank Davis? How do you see that fight playing out?” Jorge Linares replied, “Danger fight danger fight for Lomachenko.”

Referring to Lomachenko’s age, he added that there’s a strong possibility he may consider retiring from boxing. Likely, he might go ahead with a fight or two, ‘El Niño de Oro‘ posited. Nonetheless, fans continue to believe it’s a fight waiting to happen. But the fact remains: “It’s a very dangerous fight for Lomachenko,” Jorge Linares insisted again.

When the action begins, Jorge Linares sees Davis winning by a technical knockout. This left the reporter puzzled, prompting a query about whether the Ukrainian wizard had any chance of squeezing a win through the scorecards.

‘No,” came the answer. According to Jorge Linares, Vasyl Lomachenko might be fast and an expert at striking from different angles. But one should always go back to what happened in Gervonta Davis’ latest fight. “From the first round to the fifth round, he lose by point, you know, but after that, he looking…the moment, the timing, the tempo, and what he said,” asked Linares. “I’m with that overcut,” the reporter replied. Jorge Linares could not have agreed more.

Gervonta Davis vs. Vasyl Lomachenko: A spectacle immersed in risks

It’s worth noting that Jorge Linares lost his WBA and The Ring titles to Vasyl Lomachenko back in 2018. This positions him well to gauge how a fight with ‘The Matrix’ might unfold, despite acknowledging a higher likelihood of losing. Then, while speaking with Molly Qerim on ‘First Take’, Stephen A. Smith acknowledged the kind of expertise Vasyl Lomachenko brings to the table.

He believes in the sheer technical ability of the Ukrainian, his footwork, and his experience. But his concerns were similar to those of many who have asked the same question: whether ‘The Matrix’ could withstand Gervonta Davis’ firepower. “I don’t know if Lomachenko’s has the power to stop Gervonta Davis, which means that we’d basically be watching the fight to see if he will outbox Gervonta or if he’ll survive,” he said. So if that’s the case, then it’s not the fight he would want to see, Smith insisted.

Certainly, ‘The Matrix’ reminded everyone that he wasn’t completely washed out. The fight with George Kambosos Jr. is a fine example. He has experience participating in some big fights. But then he is not as big a star as Gervonta Davis. So if a fight does get inked, then it has the makings of a big draw, without any doubt. More so, given the fact that ‘Loma’ will turn 37 next February. Hence, perhaps this is the best time to close the fight deal.
