Anyone still doubting should now have their concerns allayed. Why? Because Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. are now back where most boxers find themselves in the lead-up to their fights. They are engaging in the ritual of online squabbles. Brief, but enough to reassure the fans who were taken aback by ‘Tank’ Davis’ shocking message some time ago.

The fight is f***ing cancelled,” the comment on ‘Tank’ Davis’ Instagram story couldn’t have been more direct, it seems. Soon rumors about the already postponed fight’s potential cancellation swirled. Perhaps the champion had a brief moment of distraction. As he resumed training at the gym, his latest photos shared on social media showed him sporting a new hairdo. Now, if that was not sufficient to relieve doubts, Davis and Roach Jr. resumed their rivalry with some animated conversations.

Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr.: Turning up the heat

While catching himself on the camera, Lamont Roach Jr. attached a crying emoji and mentioned, “I’m omw (on my way) to the gym, man. Ya be cool like how ya be cool.@dantheboxingman shared the screenshots of the Instagram story. Just below Roach Jr.’s message, a response flashed about: “Laugh now… Ya son gonna be crying later…

There was one more message, an expletive-laden taunt likely intended to get into Roach Jr.’s head. Perhaps Lamont Jr. appeared distracted and not focused on the fight. It was foreseeable. He would miss out on post-fight attention because he wouldn’t be able to secure any win.

But laughing out loud, Lamont Roach downplayed the taunt. He replied, “Ya man back at it again lol stay focused, champ. I’m working!” The latter part of the message includes remarks that are explicit and may be deemed inappropriate.

Scheduled to meet at New York’s Barclays Center on March 1, this sums up the quick back-and-forth between the two champions.

A potential turn in the fight with retirement concerns

Fans can expect their rivalry to intensify as fight night approaches. In the meantime, discussions about the fight’s outcome have already taken over mainstream forums. A pedigreed boxer boasting a stellar amateur record, Lamont Roach Jr. had to take special permission to move up a division and secure the face-off against Gervonta Davis.

He became a world champion for the first time in November 2023 when he defeated Hector Garcia for the super featherweight title. But notwithstanding his lack of exposure, few feel ‘The Reaper’ from Washington D.C. has the potential to blunt ‘Tank’s’ deadly attack. If not able to win, then he can take the Baltimorean the whole distance, like Isaac Cruz and German Meraz did in the past.

At last year’s press conference, Gervonta Davis shocked everyone with his announcement of retiring by the end of 2025. Fans will eagerly await whether he returns for a major fight against top names like Vasyl Lomachenko (assuming he hasn’t retired) and Shakur Stevenson before hanging up his gloves for good.

For now, fans can take comfort. One of the year’s most anticipated duels is back on track.

What are your thoughts on the March 1 showdown between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr.? Do you think Roach has the potential to make a historic upset?
