Without a doubt, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has played a significant role in taking Gervonta Davis to the level where he stands today. Reportedly, the Baltimorean southpaw, who debuted professionally in 2013, joined Mayweather Promotions two years later, in 2015. In a 2018 interview, he spoke about the time before he joined the Mayweather stable.

For the next seven years, Mayweather Jr. and his team steered Davis’ career to the heights of boxing. However, their relationship ended before last year’s fight against Rolando Romero on May 28. The separation was amicable by all means, with ‘Tank’ even crediting his mentor-promoter for whatever he achieved thus far.

The five-year-old video of an interview Davis gave to Vlad TV was once against shared with fans through the latter’s Facebook page early today. No doubt about guessing; it is finding a resurgence of sorts after his outstanding knockout victory over Ryan Garcia.

So in the interview, the reporter wanted to know the extent to which he got to know Floyd Mayweather Jr. before he signed up for his promotions. He asked, “Did you and Floyd build a relationship before you signed or was it kind of pretty quick?

Gervontaa Davis replied, “Uh, no I asked [was] what [Floyd] for the whole summer before I signed with him you know before I even you know signed anything on paper he already bought me cars, he bought me jewelry and things like that.” People who know Mayweather Jr. well might agree since he has a reputation for buying expensive gifts for his closest friends and family members.

Mayweather Jr. launched his ship in 2006 after leaving promoter Bob Arum‘s Top Rank. Al Haymon, one of his long-time advisors, started his promotional venture Premier Boxing Champions, in 2015. So before he joined Mayweather Promotions, Haymon was reportedly looking after Davis also.

Talking about their current relations, many fans would have noticed that Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, acted as Gervonta Davis’s advisor during his latest bout against Ryan Garcia. Even Mayweather Jr. made a solid appearance in support of his former protege. At the T Mobile Arena, he was found gleefully cheering for him. Post-fight, the two even left together like two good old chums.
