WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo raised eyebrows by tipping the scales at 166.4 pounds during the weigh-in, surpassing the contracted catch weight of 163 pounds for his upcoming 10-round, non-title bout against Jose Benavidez Jr. The weight discrepancy of 3.4 pounds adds a layer of uncertainty to the anticipated showdown. In contrast, Benavidez adhered to the stipulated limit, officially weighing in at 161.2 pounds.

Thus, setting the stage for a compelling matchup in their Showtime Pay-Per-View co-feature. Even after this, the fight hasn’t been canceled and the management is still working on some ways to make the bout happen. Jermall Charlo’s struggle to meet the weight requirement for his super middleweight debut took a surprising turn during the second attempt on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale. Notably, Charlo returned with a weight of 166.6 pounds, slightly heavier than his initial attempt. In contrast, his opponent, Jose Benavidez Jr., managed to stay within the boundaries of the middleweight division, weighing in at 1.2 pounds above the 160-pound limit.

Still, after everything, both fighters turned up at the ceremonial weigh-in and even had a bit of face-off, where Charlo mocked Benavidez Jr for trying to intimidate him. This entire fiasco had the veteran Promoter Lou DiBella outraged on X. He wrote, “I hate this. Regular occurrence these days. SO disrespectful to his opponent, fans, and [boxing].

He also expressed disappointment that even in the second attempt Charlo was unable to lose another pound. He also added, “Have to assume he was all dried out, right … THEN GIVE UP THE MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE RIGHT NOW!!” Later, Jermall Charlo himself talked about his increased weight, which puts forth some more developments moving forward.

Charlo didn’t have enough time for preparation

Just before the ceremonial weigh-in, Jose Benavidez Jr’s father, Jose Benavidez Sr, voiced his thoughts on Charlo coming in heavier than the decided catchweight. He stated that the whole situation made him a “little upset“, and he doesn’t think Charlo really wants to fight his eldest son. Moreover, he said, “If it was for me I would cancel that fight but Junior, he’s a warrior. He got ready for this fight and we kind of worked something out and I’m thinking hopefully he can show up and we can make that fight.”

As aforementioned, Charlo did show up. So even after coming in 3.6lbs heavier, Benavidez Sr is still ready to face him inside the ring on November 25. As per Boxing Kingdom, Charlo talked about his weight discrepancy and revealed how he only had 3-weeks training camp for this showdown. In addition to this, the reports suggest that ‘Hit Man’ is also going through a rough patch, since he’s battling against some mental health issues. It’s surreal that even after all of these developments, the fight is still coming to fruition.
