Finally, the grit and determination of Daniel Dubois paid off. The 26-year-old heavyweight from London, who suffered a controversial knockout loss to Oleksandr Usyk in August, returned with an emphatic win over the much bellicose Jarrell Miller in Riyadh a few minutes ago. Dubois and Miller were fighting as one of the cards on ‘The Day of Reckoning’, headlined by Anthony Joshua and Otto Wallin, with Deontay Wilder and Joseph Parker fighting as the co-main event.

The lead-up to the fight saw much trash talk from the American heavyweight, who even had a go at Joshua. Things hit the roof when Miller pushed Dubois during their weigh-ins. The former returned to active boxing last year after allegedly failing a slew of tests to check usage of performance-enhancing substances. Many believe the defeat to Dubois signals the end of 35-year-old Miller’s career. Even some of the commentators on board didn’t shy away from issuing a stern judgment about his future.

Former IBF middleweight title holder and now Matchroom Boxing‘s commentator, Darren Barker, was scathing in his response. He mentioned that it could probably be the last time boxing lovers would see Jarrell Miller in a ring. He said, “We have just seen the end of Jarrell Miller.” Then another former light middleweight champion-turned-commentator, Sergio Mora, termed it a farewell to Jarrell Miller, but for all the good reasons. According to Mora, the American heavyweight got the thrashing that he had genuinely asked for. He said, “Good riddance. He got the beatdown he deserved.”

Though not addressed directly, Mora later, through his personal X/Twitter account, stated, “Cheaters never win in the end.”

The comments have been drawing all sorts of reactions from followers. However, given how big a tall order it would be for Jarrell Miller to stage a return, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he goes into retirement or simply fades away.

Jarrell Miller: A return to defeat

Most fans might remember that Jarrell Miller and Anthony Joshua were all set to clash back in 2019. But before the fight took place, ‘Big Baby’ reportedly failed to clear drug tests. Since the match was supposed to take place at Madison Square Garden, the New York State Athletic Commission refused to provide him with a boxing license. Subsequently, Miller was removed from the fight. Later, the WBA stipulated a six-month ban on the Brooklyn-born heavyweight. They cleared his name from their rankings as well.

He had another fighter scheduled for 2020. But once again, it seemed he couldn’t clear a pre-fight drug test. After his last fight on November 17, 2018, when he became the WBA-NABA interim and WBO-NABO heavyweight title holder, Jarrell Miller returned only on June 23 last year. For Daniel Dubois, the tough win is sure to keep him in the race for title contention next year.
