Homecoming for Subriel Matias

Eddie Hearn disclosed to Fight Hype that Richardson Hitchins (17-0, 7 KOs) would face Gustavo Daniel Lemos (29-0, 19 KOs) in an eliminator, and the prize would be a showdown with Matias. “Richardson is in a final eliminator with Lemos for Subriel Matias. So that is a fight that is inevitable. And that’s a tough fight for Subriel. Subriel is a beast, but Richardon is a very good fighter with an incredible boxing IQ as well. Let’s see if he can come through Lemos,” Hearn said.

Besides, Hearn mentioned that they wanted Matias to make his Matchroom debut in June in Puerto Rico. They would then follow it with a big fight towards the end of the year. The Matchroom lynchpin added, “We want to headline Matias in Puerto Rico in June. A good homecoming fight and them moving forward and fight a big, big name at the back end of the year. I think one of the most exciting pound-for-pound fighters in the world and very honored to get his signature.”

When asked why the 31-year-old champion is not fighting on American soil, Hearn pointed out that home was important to Matias. Hearn continued, “Because he wants a homecoming. Home is very important to him. And I believe he could be the next Tito Trinidad, and we want to build him in Puerto Rico and in America as well.”  But how does Matias feel about fighting bigger names?

Matias promises to KO and retire big names

Well, the 20-1 record holder is the retirement specialist. His last two victims, Jeremias Ponce and Shohjahon Ergashev retired shortly after tasting a KO defeat. He wants to face the best super lightweight fighters, Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney. Speaking at the Matchroom presser, Matias declared, “I will knock out and retire Lopez.”
