Joseph Diaz Jr. vs Mercito Gesta will now unexpectedly replace Gilberto Ramirez vs Gabriel Rosado this Saturday in California’s Long Beach. Gilberto Ramirez, who is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya‘s Golden Boy Promotions, failed to make the required 175-pound weight for the Rosado fight. As reported by ESPN, Ramirez weighed in at 182.6 pounds at the weigh-ins which led to the promised main event being canceled.

Ramirez (44-1, 30 KOs), whom De La Hoya thought was capable of breaking Floyd Mayweather’s records, fought his last against Dmitry Bivol. After Bivol handed ‘Zurdo’ his first upset in pro boxing, the latter’s team approached Gabe Rosado (26-16-1, 15 KOs) with the hope to revive Ramirez’s winning journey. However, after the Mexican missed his weight, the California State Athletic Commission suspended him till 14th September 2023.

After he missed weight, Ramirez took to Instagram and condemned himself while apologizing to his fans. He declared, “This is the first and last time. I have always prided myself on being a professional, but today was not my finest moment.”

After Mike Coppinger from ESPN reported the news via tweet, several boxing fans reacted to it. Notably, Canelo Alvarez is scheduled to take on John Ryder in his homecoming bout in May. This led De La Hoya, in his FightHype interview, to state that the Mexican was “regressing inside the ring”. Under the light of the same comment, a user named @LakeShow91 wondered if De La Hoya now thought that ‘Zurdo’ was also “regressing”.

Likewise, @GeezytheDj reminded De La Hoya to worry about his own fighters instead of Canelo Alvarez.

However, @Aron_Todd felt bad for those who had traveled to see Ramirez square off against Rosado in the ring.

According to @sreezy26, this is “extremely unprofessional” and he feels Ramirez should be suspended for some time.

Finally, in one word, @GeorgeMaac described the moment.
