Demetrius Andrade has been a world title holder in two weight classes. However, in a true sense, and probably to his reckoning, he has yet to make a mark in the big league. The Rhode Island-born Southpaw perhaps understands that time is no longer an ally he can depend on. He returned in January this year after a break lasting nearly fourteen months. But he needs to ensure his moves are not wide off the mark. Hence, he now has a fight with the potential to provide the breakthrough he had been looking forward to.

He will meet WBC (Interim) Super Middleweight Champion David Benavidez at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas on November 25. ‘The Mexican Monster’ remains the WBC mandatory challenger to Canelo Alvarez. Hence, a win over him will give excellent footing to Andrade’s ambitions to square up against the man he has been chasing for the last few years. During the kick-off press conference yesterday, he got to share his views with reporters, especially on the remarks of Alvarez.

One of the reporters asked Demetrius Andrade forthrightly. Whether much of his criticisms of Canelo Alvarez owe their origin to some of the comments the Mexican icon mouthed off the last time they met. The former world champion replied, “Canelo…..Canelo, yeah he talking sh*t….payday, this I’am a horrible fighter, then you know people… people like, um, send me things about like him somebody asked him a question about, oh, what about David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade then he goes 50-50 fight so how am I horrible fighter and then fighting David Ben is a 50-50 fight?”

Two years ago, Canelo Alvarez addressed the reporters during the post-fight conference of the Billy Joe Saunders fight. Demetrius Andrade and a few of his team members who were present soon started interfering.

A stroll through time

Andrade asked, “Good job tonight. When can we make it happen? What [do] you think? What [do] you think?” Alvarez responded, “Man, you fight with nobody. You are a champion, but you fight with nobody.

When the security tried to lead ‘Boo Boo’ out of the venue, the Super Middleweight champion continued, “You’re never going to get to fight me. You are [a] horrible fighter, [a] horrible fighter, [a] horrible fighter.” Later, Andrade shouted back at him, “Come beat me then, you little b**ch!” The latter responded, “Payday, payday—you want a payday. I know that.

Demetrius Andrade later clarified during the kick-off presser that he greatly admires Alvarez’s fighting abilities. He acknowledges the kind of work the Mexican champion is putting in. But the way he treated him wasn’t acceptable. At the beginning of the interview, he made it clear that he was not dependent on a fight with Alvarez. However, fans and journalists should convince Alvarez to fight to take on either the winner or the loser on November 25, if necessary. After all, he and Benavidez are the top-ranked boxers in the division who can take on anyone.
