Undisputed Truth is a memoir written by Mike Tyson. It documents his journey from his tumultuous childhood to becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in history. Recently, an excerpt from the book surfaced on Facebook. In this particular section of his memoir, Tyson contemplated the urgency that consumed both himself and Cus D’Amato, acutely aware of the ticking clock. With Cus in his seventies, time was not on their side, urging them to take swift action.
Tyson comprehended that his unconventional journey to triumph didn’t involve traditional education or societal norms, but rather an unwavering pursuit of the heavyweight championship. Recognizing Tyson’s unwavering dedication and fiery passion, Cus lamented the scarcity of their time together. However, despite their shared dreams, Tyson struggled to maintain discipline beyond the boxing ring. Here is a video of Tyson talking about Cus.
Although he exhibited commitment during his Catskill training, he often succumbed to a reckless lifestyle in Brooklyn, engaging in petty crimes. Tyson candidly admits that such behavior would have devastated Cus if he had been apprehended. Yet, amid his own uncertainties, Tyson acknowledged that Cus, having mentored legendary champions like Floyd Patterson and Rocky Graziano, saw something extraordinary in him—a raw talent waiting to be unleashed. Embracing Tyson’s presence, Cus boldly declared him his next heavyweight champion, leaving Tyson bewildered yet intrigued.
