In a remarkable comeback, Jermall Charlo, the WBC middleweight world champion, made his return to the ring after an almost two-and-a-half-year hiatus. His opponent, Jose Benavidez Jr., proved to be a tough challenge, setting the stage for a ten-round bout. Charlo’s initial struggles, including him missing the weight at 166.5 lbs for the 163 lbs catchweight fight, raised eyebrows. Despite losing a portion of his purse, Charlo faced a determined Benavidez Jr., who sought to capitalize on the champion’s inactivity.

The early moments of the fight showcased Charlo’s rustiness, with a tentative start allowing the underdog to gain confidence. Charlo found his rhythm towards the end of the first round, delivering a hard counter right hand that staggered Benavidez Jr. As the bout progressed, Charlo’s superior boxing skills became evident. Despite Benavidez Jr.’s attempts to rally, Charlo maintained control. In the end, Charlo’s dominance persisted, leading to a unanimous decision victory.
