Despite the previous debacle involving Eddie Hearn’s efforts to arrange the Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn fight, Matchroom’s boss is determined to revive the matchup. Reports suggest that Eubank and Benn have reached an agreement to face off on December 23rd. Benn recently ended his 18-month hiatus with a decision victory over Rodolfo Orozco in his 154-pound debut, displaying a somewhat diminished punch at the new weight class.

Eubank regained some credibility by stopping Liam Smith in their rematch, albeit with Smith nursing a compromised leg. While the matchup may lack its former glory, Hearn believes in the fight’s name value and novelty, even in the face of skepticism from British commissions. Chris Eubank Sr, however, has his complaints regarding the fight.

Chris Eubank Sr warns Conor Benn

The anticipated fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn stems from the intense rivalry between their fathers, Nigel Benn and Eubank Sr., during the 1990s. The matchup has turned personal due to Benn’s past failed drug tests. While Nigel Benn supports his son, Eubank Sr. criticizes the fight, believing Benn wouldn’t be competitive. Eubank Sr. even distanced himself, refusing to join his son’s training camp for the original bout, adding complexity to the familial dynamics. While he acknowledges Benn, he finds this decision of his illogical.

He would have lost his life that night. Which is why that fight didn’t happen and why he is being boycotted.” said the retired boxer who had doubts regarding Benn’s capabilities. “Whoever’s giving you this view, that you have. You know you have discarded your entire career for Chris Eubank Jr. Who is that? Is it just your dad who wants to win over me? Or is it someone else in your team? Who juiced you up? If you were juiced up. What happened?” asked Eubank Sr. He does not believe the fight is beneficial to either of the parties and questions where the zeal to take on Eubank Jr. came. One can trace the mention of Nigel back to the long-drawn feud between the two now-retired boxers.

The familial rivalry

The upcoming match even be considered a continuation of the long-drawn rivalry between the two fathers. In 1990, the historic clash between Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn marked the beginning of a legendary British boxing rivalry. The dramatic bout in Birmingham saw Benn’s team sabotage Eubank’s ring walk, setting the stage for an intense showdown. Despite both men showing signs of wear by the later rounds, Eubank Sr. made a comeback, knocking down Benn and ultimately winning the WBO world middleweight title.
