‘He’s Unprofessional and Pretty Wack of a Champion Like Himself’’: Ryan Garcia Questions Gervonta Davis’s ‘Integrity’ as He Arrives Late at the NYC Press Conference

Ahead of the April 22nd showdown, Ryan Garcia questioned Gervonta Davis’s professionalism, integrity, and will to compete as the latter arrived late at the NYC press conference. While Davis was absent, Garcia spoke about what the upcoming fight meant to him and the “stipulations” put against him. According to Garcia, Davis enjoys fighting contestants with no power and likewise is trying to “weight-drain” his opponent. In short, Garcia believes the stipulations put against him reflect Davis’s true character and expose who the latter is.
“He doesn’t have the heart of a champion. Look at how he represents himself as a champion. He’s not even here. It’s been over an hour… In reality, if you look at the truth, he’s unprofessional and pretty wack of a champion like himself,” said Garcia at the NYC press conference in the absence of Davis.

Due to the stipulations that Gervonta Davis put against Garcia, the latter claims he should have probably said ‘no’ during the negotiations for the fight. However, since the misconceptions about him had tired him, Garcia felt the urge to face Davis who has a 92.86% KO rate as per BoxRec in pro boxing. For Garcia, who plans to face Vasyl Lomachenko after Davis, his desire to accept the fight against ‘Tank’ is a testament to what his heart truly is.
“I think it’s really a testament to what my heart truly is… I was tired of the misconceptions about myself. And I said to myself, ‘You know what, I’mma do whatever I have to do to make the fight happen'”, said Garcia.

Regarding the stipulations, he added, “A lot of the time during the negotiations I probably should have said ‘no’. Because of the stipulations, he put against me. Obviously, he likes to fight people with no power, so he’s trying to weight-drain me. There’s a rehydration clause – I can’t gain more than 10 lbs.” Despite the stipulations against him, Garcia will square off against Davis. According to Garcia, the stipulations simultaneously show Davis’s character, the will of a competitor, and integrity. “There’s a lot of stipulations in there that show what kind of character he has – the integrity and the will of a competitor,” he added by saying.
