Canelo Álvarez, the unified super middleweight champion, decisively defeated Jermell Charlo in September 2023. The unanimous decision victory, with judges scoring the bout 119-108, 118-109, and 118-109, showcased Álvarez’s dominance and refuted any notions of a decline in his boxing abilities. Notably, Charlo courageously moved up two weight classes to face the formidable Álvarez.

The PBC was impressed by the performance of Canelo Álvarez, and it made sense for the banner, as last year, they branded Jermell Charlo as the ‘Fighter of the Year’. So, the man who had defeated their 2022 Fighter of the Year holds the right to hold that accolade this year. However, the major contention behind this award is that it may have been given because Alvarez signed a three-fight deal with the PBC last year.

Having collaborated with Matchroom Boxing for six of his seven previous bouts, Canelo Álvarez made a noteworthy shift in his promotional allegiance to PBC for a reported three-fight deal. The first bout under this new alliance culminated in a triumphant defense of his undisputed crown against Jermell Charlo. Now, boxing enthusiasts eagerly anticipate a second potential blockbuster matchup emerging from Alvarez’s deal with the PBC.

But before that, Al Haymon‘s promotional banner rewarded their star boxer with the biggest accolade they had. They posted a video with the highlights from the Canelo Álvarez vs. Jermell Charlo fight. Above the montage, they wrote, “And finally, the award for #BestOfPBC2023 #FighterOfTheYear goes to… @Canelo! Don’t call it a comeback. Canelo Alvarez capped off a sterling 2023 with a dominant victory over Jermell Charlo in a battle of undisputed champions. What awaits in 2024?

The big fight will supposedly be against the undefeated David Benavidez. He’s the current interim WBC champion, who has been gaining acclaim, notably with his recent spectacular four-round finish against Demetrius Andrade following his impressive March victory over Caleb Plant. So, the fans really want Alvarez to take on Benavidez, and some of them were even against Canelo Álvarez getting recognized as the best fighter in 2023.

Fans are in denial with the choice

The fans were not happy with PBC’s decision to choose ‘Cinnamon’ for the accolade. Many called the banner out and even recommended David Benavidez for such a status. One of the fans stated that it’s quite easy to be called Fighter of the Year if they defeat a person who’s already moving two weight classes to fight them.

Another fan took the name of David Benavidez for this status, since in their eyes, he’s achieved more than Alvarez.

However, one fan believed that this was quite a sane decision.

They even went on to state that Alvarez has one of the best records in the current boxing scene.

A fan took a different direction when they said that even though Alvarez is a great boxer, he cannot be the 2023 Fighter of the Year.
