Canelo Alvarez cried after losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. It was his first professional defeat and the painful loss taught him a lot. The bout took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The 152-pound catchweight bout for the Light Middleweight championship showcased the contrasting styles of the two boxing giants. In fact, this fight had generated $150 million in revenue from a whopping 2.2 million pay-per-view buys.

Through his impeccable defense and calculated counterattacks, ‘Money’ left Alvarez unable to find any openings. Notably, there was a difference of 13 years between them, allowing Mayweather to use his experience and ring IQ to outmaneuver Alvarez. It was his 45th consecutive win as a professional. While the Mexican yearned for a rematch, Mayweather wanted none of that. Recently, boxing fans looked back at the match and shared their thoughts.

Many boxing fans might agree that the fight against Mayweather changed Alvarez. After this defeat, he only lost again in 2022 against Dmitry Bivol. During the time between these two losses, Alvarez managed to become a middleweight, super middleweight, and semi-complete champion.

Further, another fan answered the question about who would win if both fighters were in their prime during the bout. They claimed, “Prime mayweather prime canelo, same result.” Interestingly, not many know that Alvarez was first offered to fight Mayweather when he was just 18. That was five years before they actually fought. Canelo Alvarez was offered $1 million for the fight, but he refused because his trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, knew Alvarez would receive a bigger offer to face ‘Pretty Boy’ in due course of time. And that’s what happened!

Meanwhile, a user applauded Mayweather’s exceptional performance despite the size difference between the two. They called Mayweather’s performance that night “great.” They further stated that “even though he was small but he made a mess of conelos boxing skill.”

The 15-pound weight disadvantage against Alvarez was no issue for ‘Pretty Boy’. The American defeated his opponent via a majority decision after 12 rounds of war and continued his winning spree.
