Finally, the fight of fights is over. The euphoria that reached its crescendo in Diriyah Arena went through ebbs and flows from the time it erupted in 2021. The fight scheduled on December 21 that year caved because of Tommy Fury‘s chest infection and rib injury. The next, planned for August last year, also failed to bear fruit owing to the Englishman’s visa problems. But it seems during the months that followed, talks in the background to bring about the fight for good continued. And come the new year, fans and followers finally got to witness what they had been yearning for the last two yearsJake Paul vs Tommy Fury.

Yesterday, the two long-time rivals battled in front of a packed crowd. Fortunately, it didn’t prove a dud. Fans and followers couldn’t have asked for more from either of the fighters. Jake Paul, time and again fending off accusations of not fighting a full-blooded boxer, finally got a chance to prove himself a boxer worth every penny. On the other hand, Tommy Fury found the opportunity to shut down all those who judged him for deliberately staying away from fighting Paul.

Not for once did the fight lose a moment of excitement. But as it progressed, it became apparent that the twenty-three-year-old half-brother of the reigning Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, through his jabs, left the American contender with few answers. As a result, the fight witnessed a lot of clinching, intended to tear apart a cadence, so much so that the referee intervention became a regular feature.

Paul and Fury suffered a point deduction in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively. Then, in the final round, it seemed Paul had served the coup de grace with his stinging jab, sending Fury to the canvas. But it proved momentary as the latter got up and fought till the round ended. Though he reportedly won the last round 10-8, it was too little too late for ‘The Problem Child.’

Clearly, Tommy Fury had done his homework and played his part in the opening rounds to secure a win in his favor by a split decision (74 – 75, 76 – 73, 76 – 73).

Undoubtedly a winner for life!

Obviously disappointed with the outcome, Paul admitted to not being at his best. Talking to Radio Rahim post-match, he said, “All respect to Tommy; he won. Don’t judge me by my wins; judge me by my losses. I’ll come back. I think we deserve that rematch; it was a great fight, a close fight. I don’t know if I agree with the judges. I got a 10-8 round twice….”

At that moment, a faint booing could be heard in the background. But undeterred, Paul continued, “…and look, I’ve already won in life, man. I’ve already won. I’ve won in every single way. I have an amazing family, amazing friends, uh, amazing work ethic. I’ve made it farther than I ever thought that I would and and Beyond…
