“I Know What That Girl’s Family Has to Be Going Through Right Now. And I Feel for Them”: Boxing Legend Roy Jones Jr. Was Deeply Saddened After Learning About Brittney Griner’s Situation

On February 17, WNBA star Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia for carrying cannabis into the country. After the hearing at a court this Thursday, Griner was found guilty and hence sentenced to prison for nine years over drug smuggling. An initiative of prisoner swap is being taken to free Griner from prison and bring her home to America. Among others, legendary boxer Roy Jones Jr., who has dual citizenship in the United States and Russia, stepped up.

A month and half ago, TMZ Sports engaged in a conversation with Roy Jones Jr. Apart from the prison swap, his connection with Vladimir Putin, he expressed how he felt about Brittney Griner and her loved ones in the U.S. On being asked if Jones Jr. had been trying to facilitate Griner’s release from a Russian Prison, Captain Hook answered in the affirmative.

He had said, “Yes, I have been trying to facilitate that situation. When you can talk to both sides, it’s a beautiful thing. Because somebody has to have a connection or the poor girl would be lost with no chance to get back home. For my daughter, I want anybody that has any connections to do anything to get my daughter home.” 

Roy Jones Jr. feels for Brittney Griner and her family in the U.S.

Roy Jones Jr. claimed to understand what Griner‘s family must have felt at the WNBA star’s unfortunate detention. With compassion for Griner, Jones Jr. added by saying, “I know what that girl’s family has to be going through right now, and I feel for them. Would I put my life on the line to take a chance to get to Russia to exchange prisoners for her? Yes, I would.”

Jones Jr. continued, “Why? Because for my daughter, I want somebody to do the same thing for me. I’d be glad that somebody has a close enough connection or is liked enough that people will respond to that person.”

With the responsibility that Jones Jr stepped up, it merits admiration and praise. There’s so much Jones Jr. teaches with his words of compassion. Undoubtedly, to use one’s stardom and popularity to help someone return home to their loved one is an apt use of influence and position.
