It seems like the news hasn’t spread widely yet. Otherwise, reports about a boxing legend who suffered a serious road accident would have spread like wildfire. Perhaps the eyes of the boxing world are currently glued to the big events lined up this weekend and the one following. For the unversed, the former WBA (regular) light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana sustained injuries during a road accident two days ago. Later hospitalized, he received treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The latest updates on the incident suggest that his condition is stable. The living legend got in touch with all his well-wishers and shared that he has been recovering well. Following the September 2014 rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr., ‘Chino’ Maidana decided to retire from boxing. However, he remains in touch with the sport. His brother Fabian Maidana is still an active professional boxer.

Beloved icon suffers injuries in accident

Pictures of Maidana recuperating at the hospital appeared on social media. Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina-based Spanish news provider ‘LA Capital’ shared the images of the accident. It appears Marcos Maidana was riding a motorbike, which subsequently hit a car. Later he was taken to a hospital in Avellaneda, a town in Santa Fe province. “Good morning everyone, I’m fine. My back hurts a little; I hit my foot on the ground a little. I think I landed on it when I fell. I love you all; thank you all for your patience and for asking how I am,” said the legend through a video message he shared from the hospital bed.

Spilling the beans on the incident, he said, “I am alive. I was going 200 km/h, and I grabbed the car. Imagine that I am alive by a miracle.” Wishing a speedy recovery for Maidana, WBA released an official statement through its portal. “On behalf of the entire boxing community, the WBA sends its support and well wishes to Marcos Maidana and his family during this difficult time,” said the Panama-based sanctioning body.

Marcos Maidana and the fights that made history

Most of the fans remember Maidana for the two fights he fought with Floyd Mayweather Jr. However, to some, the colorful exchange that took place between him and Adrien Broner during their title clash for the WBA title remains a standout memory. Putting in his best effort, the American stayed cocky and indulged in trash talk and gimmicks. However, Maidana retained his usual composure, plowed on, and secured an emphatic, unanimous victory.

The following year, on May 3, 2014, he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the first time. In what proved to be one of the toughest duels of his career, the Grand Rapids-born unbeaten champion barely managed to impress the judge to scrape through a narrow majority decision win. By the time the duo turned up for a rematch, the American boxer was better prepared. Squashing Maidana’s frequent attempts to close in the Olympian produced yet another master class, outboxing his Argentinian foe to walk away with a unanimous win.

For a legend who gave fans such memorable epics, let’s send him our best wishes for a fast recovery.
