Boxing is entertainment, so to be successful a fighter must not only win but he must win in an exciting manner,” this particular statement became the stronghold behind the famous Peekaboo boxing stance. Cus D’Amato believed in these words, and that’s when he invented this unique technique, where a fighter can get offensive while moving on the defensive foot. Mike Tyson became the epitome of his thought, D’Amato took Tyson under his tutelage when he was only 14 years old. But even after Cus died in 1985, Tyson never stopped walking on his prescribed path.

Before Cus legally adopted Tyson, Muhammad Ali sought to train with him, but Cus blatantly refused. He stated that he had no patience for the Ali circus. Cus had a different outlook towards pugilism, he believed that it needed to be entertaining to watch and the fighters needed to stand on the canvas with their gloves up. But to hit effectively, it’s really important to not get hit at all. For that reason, Cus invented the ‘Peekaboo’.

‘Peekaboo’ Stance: The Art of Aggressively Safe Boxing

This unusual style was mimicked by Cus D’Amato’s favorite boxer, Maxie Rosenbloom. But Rosenbloom was known for his uncanny defense, so Cus added a little twist to his technique. He taught his boxers to attack while being on their defense all the time. The ‘slipping’ through the punches and constant clever head movements were pivotal for the Peekaboo boxers.

Although ‘slipping’ was considered one of the toughest skills to possess, Cus reckoned that it was definitely worth it. So, Mike Tyson is surely a heavy-hitter, no doubt, but more importantly, he always knew how to get past his opponent’s punches. The stance required both your hands on your face, peeking at your opponent through the gap of your gloves. It then involved suddenly hitting him with a power punch and was dubbed as ‘Peekaboo’, one of the most ferocious styles in boxing.

So, Cus always made sure that his fighters never got seriously hurt, and simultaneously put on a great performance for the audience. The peculiar way of Cus’ training also involved assigning numbers to different punches, to perfectly grab the essence of the Peekaboo. It was a normal Sunday morning at the Gramercy Gym with the fighter with their hands placed in front of their face and following the 3-3-2, body-body-head, or 3-2-3, body-head-body punch patterns.

Mike Tyson’s peekaboo stance dragged a lot of fans into boxing, and this got proven with the latest video put out by Rainy Day Boxing. A lot of peekaboo fanatics went down the memory lane, as they got a deep dive look into Mike Tyson’s style of boxing. The comments section garnered the admiration and fascination attached to this style.
