It was supposed to be a conventional bout. However, it ended up becoming one of the most unconventional one. Why shouldn’t it be so? After all, a fighter who barely had any experience in professional boxing shook up the sport’s Heavyweight champion to the jolt. The latter eventually dragged himself to victory. However, wide question marks were visible on many faces present, as well as on the scores of those who watched the fight on television. Because, they felt, it was the Cameroonian-French mixed martial artist who won.

Teofimo Lopez proved this year why he is considered one of the best boxers in the world. The 26-year-old Brooklyn-born boxer, who has been going through a rough patch since his first career loss to George Kambosos Jr., defeated Josh Taylor emphatically to become a champion in the 140-pound division. After an ultra-short retirement, ‘The Takeover’ doesn’t have any more fights scheduled. Reportedly, fans could expect a return during the early months of 2024. The two-division champion was a guest at MMA Legend Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson‘s ‘Jaxxon Podcast.‘ When asked about the Tyson FuryFrancis Ngannou bout, Lopez shared what many thought should have been the ideal outcome.

And the winner is…

The former UFC light Heavyweight champion broached the topic, asking Lopez whether he saw the Fury-Ngannou match. The young boxer replied that he had never seen the full fight. Only bits, here and there, and the highlights. So just when Jackson seemed doubtful about proceeding further, co-host Bear Degidio argued to proceed with the subject. ‘The Takeover’ quipped, “I trust I trust my father, your father; he’s a coach; he’s my coach; he does; he knows what he’s doing, and we kind of see the same thing.

So now, to get a better handle on the matter, ‘Rampage’ asked whether Teofimo Lopez Sr. was partial to boxers. The world champion replied that he wasn’t. Encouraged, Jackson asked what Lopez Sr. said about the fight. ‘The Takeover’ said, “Oh, he said that uh Fury looked tired to the ends of the rounds uh and then he told me that, um that he just he doesn’t look good; he had a hard time trying to figure out Ngannou…so I mean stuff like that, and he he felt like he did win; you know, he felt like Ngannou won.

Pleased, Quinton Jackson told Teofimo Lopez to pass on his regards to his father.

A debutant’s skyrocketing ascent

Even Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn thought that Francis Ngannou won the match. Probably the split decision victory only added to the conundrum. ‘The Predator,’ to everyone’s shock, had sent ‘The Gypsy King’ down to the canvas in the third round. The Mancunian was visibly shaken; however, like a true professional, he quickly brought the fight under control. Then, as always, his deft jabs did the job, keeping Ngannou away from trying any tricks further. But still, for a pro-debutant, the latter’s performance went beyond everyone’s expectations, to the extent that one of the scorecards read in his favor. Now Francis Ngannou stands among the top ten Heavyweight boxers on the WBC roster.
