‘I Was Left to Raise Myself’: Neglected by Her Parents, Muhammad Ali’s Daughter Laila Ali ‘Went Down the Wrong Path’

Laila Ali often acknowledged the lack of guidance that she received from her parents growing up in life. Although she was the daughter of none other than the world champion boxer and Olympic gold medalist Muhammad Ali, Laila Ali felt she was neglected and left without a “routine.” In a recent interview with Dr Marissa Pei, Laila Ali spoke about being an ambitious person and nourishing rebellious energy.

According to Ali, her parents were not focused on her and this resulted in Ali lacking consistency as well as discipline in early life. However, Ali recognized herself to be very-strong minded and she did not give up on life. Soon Laila Ali followed in her father’s footsteps and made her professional boxing debut in 1999.

In her own words, Ali discovered a leader in her who would once dominate the super middleweight division of boxing.

Ali said, “I was a very ambitious person, a leader, very strong-minded. Kind of had this rebel energy inside of me.” 

However, Ali also acknowledged that she lacked discipline.

Laila Ali admits going down the wrong path in life

In her autobiography Reach!: Finding Strength, Spirit, and Personal Power, Ali spoke about not receiving guidance from her parents while growing up in the family. However, she found a sense of responsibility and took charge of her own life. The former WBC and WIBA Super Middleweight champion proudly reiterated raising herself up down the line.

“I kind of started going down the wrong path without having the discipline. Without having the consistency, a routine at home.  Two parents in the home or even one parent really being focused on me – that wasn’t the case. So, I kind of was left to raise myself,” said Ali with Marissa Pei listening.

Boxing became a way out for Ali who ended up in the juvenile hall as a teen

Lacking discipline, Ali got into trouble. “I got in a lot of trouble. Like I ended up in [the] juvenile hall at one point as a teenager. That’s jail for all of you that don’t know for teens,” she admitted by saying.

However, that also helped her turn her focus in the right direction and soon she found her voice in boxing.

“I ended up getting into boxing. I was able to let out some of these feelings that were trapped inside.”
