While marijuana might be legal in 23 states, Texas does not tolerate it. In a recent setback for rising boxing star Keyshawn Davis, he tested positive for the substance. This led to a 90-day suspension by the Texas Boxing Commission, according to Top Rank Boxing. Davis, the 2020 Olympic silver medalist, was gearing up to face former lightweight champion Jose Pedraza on December 9, a significant step in his journey toward a championship title.

Following this, the fighter has taken to X to stand up for himself while addressing his disappointed friends and fans. Davis does not believe he has done anything worthy of the suspension. What is his reasoning behind it?

Keyshawn Davis clarifies his marijuana stance online

The ‘Businessman’ has apologized to his friends and family for his inability to fight on December 9th. However, he remains unapologetic for the use of marijuana. “I apologize to my Family & Friends that I can’t perform December 9th but I WILL NOT STOP DOING SOMETHING THAT IS LEGAL & BEING SOLD IN AMERICA,” the boxer exclaimed.

Being a boxer is not a child’s play. They rigorously train for months to face their opponents inside the ring, carrying possibilities of several life-threatening injuries.

Remarking on his use of marijuana, Davis said, “Unfortunately this Boxing Commission still feels Mary Jane is a Performance Enhancement Substance. When in todays time this same substance is used for medical purposes & can be bought either medically or recreational.”

To add to it, the pressure of getting paid, and keeping their fans pleased does not help the case. According to Davis, marijuana, which is also used for medicinal purposes keeps them sane through it all.

Keyshawn stands firm in his argument and also promises to be more vigilant of testing rules.

What is next for Davis?

Davis secured his victory over Nahir Albright on October 14, initially a majority decision. However, this win has now been nullified and labelled a no-decision due to the positive drug test.

The 24-year-old won’t be eligible to compete well until January due to the suspension. Despite this setback, Top Rank remains determined, planning to reschedule the Davis-Pedraza fight for early 2024.

The lightweight division is in flux following Devin Haney’s move to challenge Regis Prograis for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship, subsequently becoming the WBC’s champion in recess at lightweight. This shift has opened up opportunities, and Davis remains a contender to watch as he navigates the challenges on his path to boxing glory.

This is not the first time a boxer has had to face the consequences of using marijuana. Some prominent names such as Nick Diaz and Matt Riddle have had their share of trouble with the plant. On the other side, legends like Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield have since long advocated the use of it.
