While at the Fontainebleau, where he went to watch the Mikaela Mayer-Sandy Ryan fight, Caleb Plant revealed that Edgar Berlanga does not feature in the next matchup. He refused to divulge the name of his opponent. The secret’s out now. On Saturday, May 31, a PBC-Amazon Prime card at the Michelob Ultra Arena will facilitate the non-title bouts of Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo.

Plant will face Jose Armando Resendiz, and Charlo will fight Thomas LaManna. The move has taken many by surprise. But, it appears, especially for Plant, the matchup has become a subject of derision. Leading the queue of skeptics, Berlanga, whose back-and-forth with Plant has gained significant traction, aimed a fresh dig. He questioned Plant for fighting a hitherto unknown fighter. Only that he seems to have forgotten his recent fight that unfolded just a few weeks ago. He fought a little-known adversary, that too on an undercard.

Edgar Berlanga: Like it or not, this is the truth!

All the sh*t @SweetHandsPlant was talking,” throwing Plant’s own words back at him, Berlanga stated. Further amplifying Plant’s predicament, he pointed out how his upcoming opponent, Nayarit, Mexico-born Jose Armando Resendiz, isn’t ranked anywhere and ‘has 2 losses.’

You are a f**king disgrace to boxing, man; it’s f**king sad!” said Berlanga. Invariably the diatribe attracted a stream of critiques. With a few even sharing pictures, users took turns to slam Berlanga for fighting Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz on the Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams-Patrice Volny card.

To set the record straight, despite his first-round win, Edgar Berlanga was the target of Caleb Plant’s candid feedback. Highlighting the footage that featured Berlanga taking his and a few others’ names for his next fixture, Plant took the opportunity to slam Berlanga. Later he questioned Berlanga for holding the NABO belt despite missing the weights during the final weigh-ins.

Played right, this could set the stage for an electrifying showdown

Sometimes, it appears deep down the two know that a fight between them is inevitable. Hence, till the time an opportunity presents itself, ‘let’s hype it up to the max!’ Otherwise, even pundits agree unanimously. Outside of any Canelo fight, in the current super middleweight landscape, the Plant-Berlanga bout remains the most exciting bargain.

Though slightly tilted in Plant’s favor, nevertheless most feel it will be a fight between two equals. On one hand, there’s one of the finest pure boxers, who went the whole distance against both Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. Then, on the other hand, a heavy hitter, who, after 16 first-round knockout wins, stepped up to fight and held his own against one of boxing’s biggest stars.

Berlanga is already done with the year’s first fight. Plant will be free after May 31. So the situation could set the stage for a showdown. Plant had already revealed about sending a contract to Berlanga. More poignantly, given Berlanga is now a free agent, he does not face the promotional restrictions that often play spoilsport with a big matchup. He can easily proceed if Plant extends an offer.

What about you? Do you think Edgar Berlanga vs. Caleb Plant could be one of 2025’s marquee events?
