Just a day ahead of his fight against his British rival, John Ryder, Canelo Alvarez showed disagreement with Gervonta Davis’ bold claims after the Ryan Garica fight. Now, Alvarez has been a dominant factor in the sport of boxing since his debut as a professional boxer back in 2005. With a splendid record of 58 wins, 2 losses followed by 2 draws, he’s currently the top fighter in the Supper Middleweight division. The fighter has jumped weights multiple times and taken on various challenges in different divisions. For instance, in 2019, he moved up two weight classes and knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round, and earned the WBO World Light Heavyweight Championship Title, hence becoming a 4-division World Champion.

He’s achieved major feats in the sport of boxing, and although he faced a loss against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, he never let that defeat stain his legacy. Instead, he moved forward with more power and knowledge, which makes Alvarez’s journey really inspiring to a lot of fans. Recently, he despised the idea that Gervonta Davis is being called the new ‘face of boxing’ just after one win in his own weight class.

A couple of weeks ago, during the feud between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis, the promoters of the event stated that the winner of this bout will come out becoming the new ‘face of boxing’. But this wasn’t taken in goodwill by Canelo Alvarez.

In a 20-minute Zoom roundtable with Doug Fischer of The Ring, Alvarez gave a jarring reply to ‘Tank’. He said, “I’m not retired yet, my friend.” He stated that the fans are entitled to their opinions but it’s not that easy to claim the top position in boxing. And Alvarez stated that you can’t be the best just after winning one fight. Davis needs to do more than just beat Ryan Garcia.

He further said, “I like Gervonta Davis a lot, but he needs to do more to be the face of boxing. One fight with Garcia, and I respect Ryan Garcia, isn’t going to do it.

Alvarez was then asked what path ‘Tank’ should take next to become the face of the sport. ‘Cinnamon’ replied that one needs to fight the best back to back, and not only in your own weight class, the fighter should be able to do it in different weight classes. Exactly what Alvarez has been doing his whole career. Moreover, Alvarez also threw some light on the highly-talked-about David Benavidez fight.

Canelo Alvarez in his conversation with The Ring, stated that he’s still in his prime and can easily win any fight, even though he’s been a professional boxer for almost 17 and a half years now. He also believes that he can definitely defeat Dmitry Bivol in a rematch, as the first time his wrist injury was reportedly a hurdle during his training.

He was then asked about his future plans to face David Benavidez in a fight. Alvarez said, “You know, I fight everybody. When [Gennady] Golovkin first appeared in the boxing community, I was the guy to face him. Same thing with Benavidez.

Alvarez is seemingly ready to take on Benavidez if he couldn’t finalize the rematch with Dmitry Bivol. Otherwise, he will be taking on Bivol first, and then, it is safe to say that he’ll take Benavidez’s offer to fight him. Whom do you want Canelo to fight next after the John Ryder fight? Bivol? Benavidez? Tell us in the comments below.
