Larry Merchant, originally Larry Kaufman, born on February 11, 1931, stands out as a prominent American sportswriter. His significant contributions were as a commentator for HBO’s boxing broadcasts. Particularly HBO World Championship Boxing, Boxing After Dark, and pay-per-view events. Many in the boxing world regard him as unparalleled in his role, earning accolades like “the greatest television boxing analyst of all time.”

This recognition comes not just from fans but also from experts, including ESPN’s boxing analyst, Dan Rafael. Merchant’s insightful commentary and deep understanding of the sport have left an indelible mark on boxing broadcasting. However, in a sad turn of events Merchant has been hospitalized leaving the boxing world in shock at the situation. Even the columnist for the New York Daily News took the chance to send his prayers for the legend.

Merchant, 92, was admitted around 6 p.m./PT on Thursday, as reported by TMZ. Throughout his boxing journey, Merchant shared the stage with boxing luminaries such as Max Kellerman, Sugar Ray Leonard, and George Foreman. Thus the situation has left the whole boxing world in disbelief. Renowned columnist Mike Lupica took the chance to share his prayers for Larry on social media. He disclosed the news to his followers writing, “The great Larry Merchant is my friend and one of my heroes. He has been hospitalized at the age of 92, and needs your prayers, along with mine.” Moreover, he also revealed that he had spoken with the legendary commentator before, complimenting him on his wit and humor.

He stated, “I spoke to him just a couple of weeks ago and it was, as always, pretty wonderful, because he was wise and funny. Which means still Larry Merchant.” However, he is not the only one left in grief over the situation.

Lou DiBella sends his prayers for Merchant

As TMZ shared the news about Merchant on Twitter, boxing promoter Lou Di Bella also took to the social media website to send his prayers for him. Even though they may have had a few moments of disagreements in the past, he didn’t hesitate to praise the commentator.

Speaking on the situation, DiBella wrote, “Prayers up for a great man, my dear friend Larry”. His message surged an immense reaction from the fans who flooded social media with their thoughts and prayers for the legend.
