In the midst of intricate negotiations, rising boxing star Ryan Garcia and his adversary Devin Haney are slated to go head-to-head in the ring on April 20. The path leading to this highly anticipated showdown was filled with uncertainties and unforeseen detours. Garcia, initially eyeing a match with Rolando Romero, saw the possibility of a clash with Haney almost slip away.

Despite the hurdles, things simply fell into place as January drew to a close, and both fighters eagerly embraced the chance to settle their differences in the ring. As the final details of the impending showdown were ironed out, Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, is contemplating the potential for yet another blockbuster event. But the boxing world is divided about the result of this clash of the elites. With years of experience behind him, here’s what former boxer Robert Garcia has to say about the fight.

Earlier, when Robert Garcia was asked about his pick for the winner of the highly anticipated bout, he had stated, “I think at this point, Devin Haney”. He had pointed out how great Haney’s performance against Regis Prograis was. Unlike his previous statement, when he was asked about his thoughts on the match-up in an interview with ESNEWS, he didn’t provide a concrete answer. He pointed out how the fight could go either way. Moreover, he attributed this to Ryan Garcia’s skills. He claimed, “I think they both win, like you said. Ryan has that speed and power that you can’t count it out, man. One punch could end the fight. He can be losing every single round- one punch could end it.”

When asked if he thinks that the match-up is going to be 50/50, he responded positively. He stated, “I know Haney’s gonna be a favorite but Ryan’s speed and power? F**k can’t count him out.” The reason for this slight shift in attitude towards ‘KingRy’ is unknown, but Robert Garcia’s words definitely add a layer of intrigue to the fight. In the meantime, Bill Haney also took a chance to fire shots at Ryan Garcia.

The backstory of this match is extensive, with Garcia and Haney crossing paths six times in the amateurs, resulting in a tie. Now, as professionals, they aim to settle the score. However, this encounter feels distinct, carrying added weight for Garcia due to recent setbacks, including his first career loss, disputes with promoter Oscar De La Hoya, and a publicized divorce from Andrea Celina.

Amidst these challenges, Bill Haney, Devin’s father and trainer, took a jab at Garcia via social media. Using the book ‘Pimp’ by Iceberg Slim, Haney suggested, “Here ya go kid @RyanGarcia read this and your ex-wife will magically walk back in your life, and you will live happily ever after.”
