Ahead of the John Ryder fight in May, Canelo Alvarez stated that he wanted to face Dmitry Bivol on September 16, Mexican Independence Day. Despite the loss to Bivol last year, speaking to ESPN, Alvarez argued that he was better than Bivol in the sport. In his opinion, since he thought he dominated Bivol for five to six rounds in their fight, Alvarez felt it was only fair that he rematched the Russian boxer at 175 lbs.
But, Bivol, averse to fighting Alvarez again at 175 lbs, announced he would only rematch the Mexican boxer at 168 lbs with the latter’s undisputed title at stake. As a result, the fight was not staged. However, as Dmitry Bivol recently confirmed his return to the sport, he was asked if he would consider rematching Alvarez. In his reply to Fight Hub TV, the Russian answered in the affirmative.

Dmitry Bivol urges Canelo Alvarez to make a move
Although the desire for a rematch is not that strong, Bivol would now prefer if the bout took place at 175 lbs, however, with Canelo’s belts on the line. Along these lines, he urged Canelo Alvarez to make a move if he wanted the bout to take place. “I didn’t take it as serious, to be honest, too much about the rematch with Canelo because it was only talking. It was just words, words. I have my own way,” said Bivol.
“Of course, it’s better to fight in my weight class and for four belts. But, if they want a rematch, it’s not enough, just talking. We need to do some moves,” added Bivol. “And we know who should do some moves. It’s not me because I’m ready to fight,” he concluded. Given his statements, it seems although Bivol is finally willing to face Alvarez at 175 lbs, the latter would have to put his undisputed status at stake.
In this context, it is worth noticing what Bivol earlier said about facing Canelo at 175 lbs.

No motivation for Bivol at 175 lbs
Earlier when Canelo insisted on facing Bivol again at 175 lbs, the Russian declared there was no motivation for him. In his opinion, since he had already beaten Alvarez at 175 lbs, it was better that the rematch took place at 168 lbs where he could compete for Canelo’s undisputed title. Likewise, he said, “Why should I even do the rematch at 175? What is the challenge or what is the motivation for me if I’ve already beaten him at that weight class?”

“He might have a better chance at 168 because he said that that’s his weight class. And for me, there should be some motivation and some challenge,” Bivol added. With that said, now that Bivol is open to rematching Canelo at 175 lbs, hopefully, Canelo would also show interest. Anyway, would you like a rematch between the two?
