In a spectacular return to the ring, WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo faced off against Jose Benavidez Jr., marking his comeback after an absence of nearly two and a half years. Charlo’s journey back wasn’t without its hurdles, with some hiccups, including him missing the weight at 166.5 lbs for the 163 lbs catchweight fight. In the end, he won the fight via a unanimous decision. It appears that with this performance, he has managed to even win over Caleb Plant’s trainer, Stephen Edwards.

Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo are not on good terms with one another. In a very public scuffle, Plant even slapped Jermall Charlo earlier this year, after which a lot of people thought that they may soon fight one another. However, Charlo instead fought Benavidez. Since he won the fight, the fight between Plant and Charlo once again appears to be on the table, at least according to Plant’s trainer

Speaking to Fight Hype.com about this, Stephen Edwards complimented Charlo as he discussed a potential bout. He stated, “I think Caleb matches up with him well. Jermall is a real good fighter, he is fundamentally sound. It’s just a good match-up for Caleb. Doesn’t mean he gonna win but you know, jab, right hand, left hook. He’s fundamentally sound so he does things the right way. So it’s like it’s not something that you’re not going to expect.”

It seems that even though he is not looking down on Charlo, he doesn’t think ‘Iron Man’ stands a chance against ‘Sweethands’. Moving further, he was asked to share his opinion about which fighter between the two has much more firepower. Surprisingly, he didn’t claim Plant’s punching power to be higher than Charlo’s.

Stephen Edwards on who has more punching power among the two

Talking about which fighter has the more powerful punch among the two, Edwards said, “I think their punching power are similar.” He pointed out that there isn’t much difference in the size of the boxers. He claimed, “I don’t think it’s a big size advantage for Caleb, but sometimes some people’s bodies allow them to squeeze down in a smaller weight.”

Furthermore, he stated, “If Caleb was hitting on 154-pounders with the same size that he has, he would probably have a higher knockout percentage too.” Pointing out that since there isn’t much difference in their sizes and punching power, Plant would be able to accomplish the same as Charlo in lower divisions. In the end, he added, “But punching power, man, it comes down to me of what guy could take the other guy’s shots better.”
