“Is there a height limit in boxing?” It’s hard to miss the taunt. But that’s what Jake Paul responded when, following the Mike Tyson fight, a reporter asked if he would be interested in fighting Gervonta Davis. At the time, the sheer thought of a matchup between a lightweight champion and a YouTuber-turned-boxer, who for the most part fought as a cruiserweight, seemed outlandish.

But a few months later, in a stunning revelation, Jake Paul shared how he and Tank were essentially in talks for a fight. But the potential rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. derailed the plans. Tank and Roach Jr.’s first fight on March 1 ended most controversially. A date has yet to be finalized. However, the rematch to set the record straight should most likely happen by summer’s end. So a few who wanted to see this seemingly discordant matchup, Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis, were really disheartened. However, it appears they may soon have a reason to rejoice. During the kickoff presser of his upcoming fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Paul had an interesting update.

Jake Paul on the Gervonta Davis fight: Don’t lose hope yet!

During a post-presser catch-up, a reporter asked Jake Paul, “One of the biggest names, Tank Davis… You and him were very close to fighting. Can we see that in November?” So Paul’s response was something that could light up scores of fans. “Yeah, no, we’re working on it behind the scenes to make that happen,” Paul said before adding, “That’s a fight where the fans are going to win, and it’s going to be the biggest event of the year.” The Ohioan refused to spill full details when the reporter probed about the discussion that took place between his and Tanks’ side. He said, “We’re working on it, but, uh, it’ll be an exhibition, most likely.”

It marks the strongest indication yet for those eager to see the matchup happen. A month ago, as he joined Amanda Serrano to promote the July 11 trilogy fight against Katie Taylor, Fight Hub TV’s Kevin Garcia asked Jake Paul, “I’ve got to ask you, how real was it with you and Tank actually being a thing? Was that something that was talked about?”

The former Disney star replied, “Yeah, no, it was highly talked about and in negotiations and almost ready to make happen.” However, circumstances played a cruel game. If only Gervonta Davis had soundly beaten Lamont Roach Jr. and not taken the knee in the ninth round.

But in the end, Tank’s inability to drub Roach Jr. and the controversy that followed became his undoing. Calls for a rematch became increasingly loud. So Jake Paul added, “He has to do his rematch with Lamont and get that W, and then we’ll be able to run it back, but me and Gervonta were scheduled to fight for sure.”

Now, even if Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis formalize a fight, it’s hard to conjure the matchup. What’s the point in having an exhibition bout? How is that going to work out? Is it going to be something like the Floyd Mayweather-Logan Paul exhibition of 2021?
