Whether you like it or not, Jake Paul never fails to surprise. From the purported matchup with Canelo Alvarez to the Anthony Joshua callout, ‘The Problem Child’ continues to disrupt boxing’s traditional narratives. But much before the recent developments, a rather unusual script surprised everyone. Because it involved Gervonta Davis!

It seems, following Paul’s fight with Mike Tyson, the lightweight champion had called him out. Nothing much happened, though. Things moved, and the challenge got relegated to a forgettable news snippet. However, it appears behind the curtains a plotline continued. Yesterday, at Madison Square Garden to promote the trilogy fight between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor, ‘The Problem Child’ spilled the beans on the potential matchup with Tank Davis. If what he said is true, then Lamont Roach Jr. has no excuse but to offer gratitude to the YouTuber-turned-boxer.

The discussion kicked off with both Paul and Serrano sharing how, thanks to the partnership with Netflix, they were now able to elevate women’s boxing to new heights. It seems for the first time in boxing, all the undercard fights will feature women fighters. So addressing Paul, Kevin Garcia from Fight Hype asked, “The last time I saw you personally was in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center, and there was a lot going on that night. I’ve got to ask you, how real or what was it with you and Tank actually being a thing? Was that something that was talked about?”

“Yeah, no, it was highly talked about and in negotiations,” Paul replied. It was “almost ready to make happen.” However, the fact is that Gervonta Davis has to proceed with a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. This is something that Paul has acknowledged and has decided to wait out. So probably after the fight, he and Davis may get in touch to discuss their fight. “But he has to do his rematch with Lamont and get that W, and then we’ll be able to run it back, but me and Gervonta were scheduled to fight for sure,” stressed Jake Paul.

On March 1, Tank’s title defense against Lamont Roach Jr. turned most unsavory. The majority draw decision added to the controversy that marred an otherwise listless performance by Davis. To settle the debate, a rematch remains the best alternative. The two are now slated to meet in June.

Fans may recall. Following the Tyson fight, Jake Paul received a string of callouts from reigning boxing champions. Gervonta Davis being one of them. However, when highlighted during the post-fight interview, Paul rather dismissed it with sarcasm.

Elli Seckbach asked, “Gervonta Davis just posted that he would beat the brakes off of you if you guys fight?” Though initially surprised, both Paul and Bidarian couldn’t hold back their amusement. Paul responded, “Yeah, I mean, I’ll be down. Let’s run it like I’ll be super, super down… Is there a height limit in boxing?”

So to have reached from the point where a reigning champion’s height came under question to a stage where, but for a rematch, Paul and Davis were almost in for a duel, many fans will be scratching their heads.

So Lamont Roach should be thankful to ‘The Problem Child?’ Not sure about that. Nevertheless, in June he has the opportunity to set the record straight. He can secure a victory, which, according to many fans, was unjustifiably denied earlier.
