Jermall Charlo is in a legal jam. The police arrested the soon-to-turn 34-year-old middleweight champion on three charges of misdemeanors; driving under the influence (DWI), evading responsibility at the scene of the accident, and avoiding apprehension by law enforcement. Per the information, the Pearland Police Department, Texas, shared with various news outlets and networks that law enforcement took Charlo into custody on Monday night. 12799 Broadway Street in Pearland, a Houston suburb, was cited as the place of arrest.

Reportedly, against the acceptable blood alcohol limit (BAC) limit (in Texas) of 0.8%, his blood alcohol content (BAC) was over 0.15%. According to an article on NBC, the police took the ‘Hitman’ to the Brazoria County Detention Center. The middleweight champion subsequently secured a release after posting a surety bond of $9,500. Jermall Charlo’s lawyer, while speaking with TMZ, expressed hope that they would resolve the matter and reach a satisfactory conclusion.

Jermall Charlo entangled in a legal web

So according to the police reports, on Monday, by around 6:41, Jermall Charlo, in his red Lamborghini, said to be worth $260,000, smashed into another vehicle. The damage caused on account of the crash has been stated to exceed $200. Following the accident, a heated argument between the two parties occurred. But Charlo decided to clear out before the police arrived. An officer, though, spotted him and brought their marked vehicle behind the champion’s car.

But the ‘Hitman’, it seems, continued to drive. Finally, it took another police officer to park their car in front of Charlo as he tried jumping a red light and pressed him to a halt. Put under arrest, he underwent routine sobriety tests once taken to the Pearland jail. Per Mike Coppinger’s piece on the news, police observed that Jermall Charlo has no control over his “normal use of his mental and physical faculties.

According to Charlo’s lawyer, Kent Schaffer in TMZ’s report, there was no involvement of banned substances. He said, “Jermall has been in training. He has not been using any type of drugs.” Further, he shared what he comprehended from the situation. It seems that neither Jermall Charlo nor anyone else involved in the accident suffered any injuries. Hence, he believed that reaching a favorable solution could be in the offing. “We are optimistic that there will be a good solution,” said Mr. Kent Schaffer.

Constant Champion

Speaking of boxing, interestingly, ‘Hitman’ fought his last title defense on June 19, 2021, against Juan Macias Montiel. But, per all available accounts, he still remains the WBC middleweight champion. After an absence from the ring that lasted over two years, Jermall Charlo returned on November 25 last year on the David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade undercard. He fought a non-title bout against ‘The Mexican Monster’s brother, Jose Benavidez Jr. Ever since there have been speculations about his next move. Especially his name started doing the rounds against Canelo Alvarez. In the latest video, he was seen talking about retirement.
