For fifty-four-year-old Roy Jones Jr., boxing flows in his veins. Born to a decorated soldier, himself a boxer, the junior took up the gloves early and made his amateur debut in 1984. Four years later, Jones Jr. won the silver at Seoul Olympics. He went professional in 1989. Roy Jones Jr. participated in seventy-five fights, winning sixty-six, out of which forty-seven came via knockouts. However, he lost nine of his bouts in a nearly nineteen-year career. He was an unconventional fighter known for superior hand speed, agility, and boxing IQ.

Post-retirement years saw him taking up training assignments. The most recognized one is the Chris Eubank Jr. camp. Son of former middleweight champion Chris Eubank, the junior enlisted Jones Jr.’s help during the Marcus Morrison fight on May 1, 2021. The team won the subsequent two battles against Wanik Awdijan and Liam Williams and awaited the big one against Conor Benn by year-end 2022.

However, as fate would have it, the fight collapsed because Benn failed the drug test. And in stepped Liam Smith. The thirty-four-year-old Liverpudlian, however, staged one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history. Till recently known for defeats received at the hands of Mexicans Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia, he stopped Eubank Jr. by the fourth round convincingly.

It seems Hearn fired the first salvo. While commending Smith’s performance, he questioned Eubank Jr.’s. In what appears to be words taken from an interview with Pro Boxing Fans, he said, “I saw what we knew, which is Liam Smith is very good, very composed…and another guy who is completely lost in his boxing. Technically, Eubank has never been great. But what he’s always had is a fearless mentality, a great chin and a great engine.”

Superman’s reply to Hearn

Irked by the Matchroon honcho’s comments, “Captain Hook” responded by calling out all boxers to stop calling him for training requirements. He said, “Warning!!!! All boxers!!!!! Avoid Roy Jones Jr as a trainer! Never mind this elbow…… Just avoid him- Damn, If I can take all that away from a fighter via training, no wonder I raised so much hell in my day!! That almost sounds like Godly qualities, And I’m nowhere near what God is!!! @eddiehearn.”
