Teofimo Sr. calls Crawford a 'weak boy'—is he right, or just stirring the pot?

Terence Crawford is in a tight spot. The American boxer has set his eyes on closing off his career with a bang and, more specifically, a fight with Canelo Alvarez. However, there is another name on the list—Teofimo Lopez Jr. But it’s that one fight he should be wary of.

Lopez, 27, has been calling out Crawford, 36, for a while for a clash but the latter is obsessed with the Mexican champion. When asked about his son’s chances of meeting ‘Bud,’ Teofimo Lopez Sr., he gave a sneak peek into the future, based on the fight outcome. If Crawford, at 41-0, won the bout, the Lopez family lynchpin admitted he would retire from promoting fights. However, Lopez Sr. didn’t see that happening and listed the reason for it.

He told Fight Hub TV, “Let’s get Crawford Teofimo in there. Let him beat my son up. So, I can just stop this. And I would retire, and I will never keep on doing this no more. But that boy is not beating up my son and he knows it. He’s too slow. He got no legs. His legs are gone.”

Lopez Sr. then argued he would prefer if the welterweight didn’t fight his son, as a loss to Crawford’s unblemished record would curtail his career. Instead, he asked the Omaha native to bag a fight with Alvarez. He declared, “That boy is weak, and that boy is scared. Because if he loses to Teofimo Lopez, his career is done. So, he’s going to keep on trying to get that Canelo fight. You know what? I hope he gets it. If it takes that for my son to fight him, let him get the Canelo fight.”

Interestingly, in the same video, Lopez Sr. gave a candid opinion about another name on his son’s hit list, Devin Haney. According to him, ‘The Dream’ avoided a fight with his son. The reason? He believed Lopez Jr. would replicate the same result, which Ryan Garcia did.

Lopez Sr. added, “I don’t believe that Haney wants to fight us. I mean, you can’t have a guy that’s coming from getting ripped apart the way Ryan did to him and come and fight my son.” However, he was also open to the idea of an entertaining fight between them as long as the money was right.

Notably, Lopez Jr. is coming off a lackluster win against Steve Claggett and now eyes a unification fight with any of the champions at 140. He could go after the WBC strap with Haney stepping out of his champion’s throne. But only time will tell whether it pans out well for him.
