It was almost 4 years since Sylvester Stallone had released the first Rocky movie in the Rocky franchise. In fact, Rocky II was also released and Rocky III was on the way. On the 2nd of October, Muhammad Ali, in his second last fight, stepped in the ring with ‘The Easton Assassin’ Larry Holmes.

With the WBC World heavyweight title on the line, Holmes and Ali went at it for 10 long rounds. The bout was originally scheduled for 15 rounds. However, Holmes put a halt to Ali within 10.

Larry Holmes dominated Muhammad Ali. At the time of the fight, Holmes was 30 and in his prime. However, Ali had slightly aged and was 38 years old as he walked in the ring. Holmes won via RTD in the 10th round. Actor Sylvester Stallone witnessed the fight. Ali endured a painful journey on the night of the Holmes fight. Here is how Stallone described Ali’s pain.

After Holmes, Muhammad Ali fought Trevor Berbick in 1981 and retired from the sport. Muhammad Ali was no more the same in the ring. According to Stallone, watching Ali getting hit in the Larry Holmes fight was “Like watching an autopsy on a man who’s still alive.”

Prior to fighting Ali, Larry Holmes trained with Ali. Ali taught him valuable lessons in boxing. Later Holms told, “There were so many great fights, and we are all tempted to go on for too long, but early on, I learned so much working as Muhammad Ali’s sparring partner for four, five years. I borrowed it all from Ali.”
