In 2019, as the iconic Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman main event took its course, a video emerged on the internet that instantly became the talk of town. The reason was Omayra Liliane Figueroa, a fitness trainer, who, as per the infamous Mayweather Channel, “stole the show” at the weigh-ins. Now, when a certain section of the boxing world awaits her presence at tonight’s Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia event, it could be interesting to explore why she grew famous back in the day.

Figueroa is a noteworthy fitness influencer with a staggering Instagram following of 46,000. She has impressed her fans with her keen interest in fitness and nutrition, and promising herself as a voice for entrepreneurial women. Tonight’s Las Vegas fight is important for her. Why? Well, two of the most important people in her life will be on the big stage as part of the stacked undercard: Mario Barrios and Brandon Figueroa. Here is everything we know about her.

Who will win the world heavyweight title?

Tyson Fury

Oleksandr Usyk

Omayra Figueroa comes from a well-known boxing family. Her is Omar Figueroa Sr. a veteran boxer and coach. While her older brother Omar Figueroa Jr. is a former WBC lightweight champion, her younger brother Brandon Figueroa is the current interim WBC featherweight champion who is getting ready to fight Jessie Magdaleno on the undercard tonight. In 2019, her brother, Omar Figueroa Jr. went against Yordenis Ugas. On the weigh-in event night, he was accompanied by Omayra to the stage where he undertook the ceremonial weight check and face-off. However, while the ceremony was as important to the event as it could get, the media made it all about her.

Multiple news outlets including the Mayweather channel focused their coverage only on her. To the point where they zoomed in on her entirely, leaving out the fighters. When she learned about this a few days later, she made a video in which she addressed her thoughts on the treatment she had received. In it, she said, “I didn’t do it on purpose. It was nothing planned. I didn’t even do anything on stage…I know a lot of people started judging me, because I’m a female and I’m in the boxing scene, I train my brother…”

A major point that everybody paid unnecessary attention to was her outfit. About it, she remarked, “And the outfit, it’s not a jumpsuit, by the way. It’s leggings and a crop top from Gym Shark, which is a fitness apparel brand… I did not wear that on purpose, I was in there all week for my brother and I literally packed just gym clothes.”

About the “stole the show” comments, she noted, “I don’t know if it is because I’m a female and it is boxing scene and it’s usually surrounded by men. So, I don’t know if that was shocking to people or if it was just that I am Omar’s sister, or just I was on stage, or who is she?”

To her credit, she is not “just” the sister of the fighters. She owns her own gym, trains her brothers and other athletes, and has her own juice bar among other things.

A sister and a trainer for the Figueroa brothers

When the entire fiasco happened, she was at the venue not just as Omar Figueroa Jr.’s sister but also as his trainer. While that was the time she actually made headlines, she is a usual attendee in both Brandon and Omar’s fights. Post Brandon Figueroa’s win in March last year, she wrote an endearing message for him on Instagram.

She posted a picture of her and her younger brother. In the captions, she wrote, “So proud of you @brandonfigueroa101… all of your hard work definitely paid off last night. Thank you for allowing me to continue to be a part of the team… for allowing me to be the big sis that I am and for trusting me.”

While she will be a huge support from him as he fights Jessie Magdaleno in tonight’s event, she will also be watching closely her boyfriend and father-to-be of their unborn child take to the ring.
