Numbers show that Ryan Garcia has landed more power punches and is accordingly more likely to achieve a KO against Gervonta Davis. Although Davis has a KO rate of 92.86%, Garcia with a KO rate of 82.61%, on average, has landed more power punches in a single round. A close reading of the numbers even indicates Garcia landing 80% of his power punches in only one round in his last fight.

However, there are also instances when Garcia has missed 80% of the jabs he attempted during a fight. On the other hand, the study also reveals an irregularity between Tank’s percentile of power punches and the time within which a KO is attained. In order to conduct the study, CompuBox Punch Stats by BoxingScene has been taken into consideration. While some discoveries are impressive, some are equally shocking.

On average, against Mario Barrios, in each round ‘Tank’ landed 41.5% of his power punches. Against Hector Luis Garcia, Rolando Romero, and Isaac Cruz, the percentages were respectively 40.4%, 32.9%, and 40.9%. On the other hand, Ryan Garcia, on average, against Luke Campbell and Javier Fortuna, in a single round scored 43.2% and 45.2% of his power punches respectively. In addition, against Emmanuel Tagoe, in total, he landed 44% of his power punches. Unbelievably, in the 6th round against Fortuna, Garcia landed 80% of his power punches.

Therefore, speaking of power punches, in their last three fights, Garcia captured a better percentage than Davis in a single round. Garcia significantly increased the percentage of power punches landed as the fights progressed. While in the 1st round, against Fortuna, he landed 33.3% of his power punches, in the 4th and the 6th round, the number went up to 60.6% and 80% respectively! Since the landing of power punches mostly contributes to achieving a knockout, Garcia displays a better chance than Davis.

But Ryan Garcia also missed almost 80% of his jabs!

Since Ryan Garcia is taller than Gervonta Davis, a busy jab will do the former benefits. However, in his last fight against Javier Fortuna, he landed only 23 out of the 100 jabs he threw at his opponent. That is to say, he missed 77% of his jabs in another language! Against Davis when jabs will play such a crucial role, how will Garcia afford to let slip almost 80% of the same? The average taken from his last three fights is even more shocking.

On average, Gervonta Davis in each of his last three fights only landed 18.8% of his jabs while the figure for Garcia is just 13.1%. Undoubtedly, jabs will play a significant role, and if Garcia fails to score an effective amount of them, he will certainly offer Davis an edge. Although the left hook is among Garcia’s strongest punches, the jab will help him keep Davis at a distance.

Irregularity: Davis might fail to KO Garcia

There is an irregularity between the average percentile of power punches landed in a single round and the time period within which a knockout is attained. Most certainly, this discovery reflects despite knockouts being plausible, they are always unpredictable. In the case of Santa Cruz, Davis achieved a 6th-round knockout while landing 54.8% of his power punches on average in a single round. Whereas, against Rolando Romero, a 6th-round knockout was achieved by ‘Tank’ while he landed 32.9%  [21.9% less] of his power punches on average in each round.

Although an average of 40.4% of power punches in each round led to a 9th-round knockout victory against Luis Garcia, an average of 40.9% of the same in each round led to a unanimous decision against Issac Cruz. Thus, the ring IQ and endurance of Gervonta’s opponents also play a crucial role in determining their fates. Therefore, how much can Garcia take, and for how long can he compete against Davis?

However, ‘Tank’ can defend

Davis has already fought and excelled against a fighter taller than Ryan Garcia (5′ 10″). Against Mario Barrios (6′ 0″ ), he landed 32.4% of his punches surpassing 23.6% of the punches that Barrios landed on him. Comparatively, till the 4th round, Barrios scored a better percentile of punches on Davis. However, as the 5th round began, the resident of Baltimore exceeded the then-undefeated ‘El Azteca’ in the ring. In the round in which Barrios scored the highest, ‘El Azteca’ landed only 3 out of 12 punches. This allows us to know Davis’s ability to defend himself well against a much taller opponent.

As of now, both fighters show flaws as well as skills. After winning the WBA title in 2019, Davis successfully defended the same six times. Will ‘Tank’ register a seventh successful title defense against Garcia? Or Garcia will snatch the win? To know the outcome, fans will have to tune in. What do you make of the percentages given?
