Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed king of super-middleweights, steps back into the ring on May 4th. His opponent? A familiar face – fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia. But the whispers of a future fight with David Benavidez are growing louder by the day. Victory against Munguia is expected, but the real question mark hangs over a potential Canelo-Benavidez clash. Will it ever happen?

According to boxing insider Stephen Espinoza, negotiations for a Canelo-Benavidez fight won’t even begin until after May 4th. But the bigger question looms: can Premier Boxing Champions afford Canelo’s astronomical asking price of $150-200 million? This hefty sum might be outside PBC’s reach, leaving boxing fans wondering if they’ll ever see this epic matchup. Well, Leonard Ellerbe believes they’ll find a way.

Then he also mentioned how Alvarez isn’t really ducking Benavidez. He mentioned, “Canelo Alvarez is not scared of David Benavidez. That’s not true. No matter what the perception looks like, that man ain’t scared. The fighters’ fight. Again, he knows what he’s doing. I think when they fight, it’s going to be a terrific fight.”

Ellerbe also affirmed that the fight between them will take place since it’s one of the biggest fights to happen in boxing today. When further probed about when it could happen, Ellerbe replied, “With these kinds of fights, at this level, it’s just patience.” However, as much as there are people like Leonard Ellerbe who believe a fight between Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez will eventually happen, there are also skeptics who believe it won’t.

Paulie Malignaggi is doubtful about Alvarez-Benavidez happening

Paulie Malignaggi, a two-weight world champion himself, throws a verbal jab, predicting that Canelo Alvarez will get “hammered” if a fight between him and David Benavidez ever takes place.

While Alvarez reigns supreme as the undisputed super-middleweight champion, Benavidez’s hunger and relentless style poses a serious threat to Alvarez. Furthermore, talking to ProBox TV, Malignaggi stated, “It’s not that important for me to watch Canelo get beaten like a rag doll. I think he gets hammered. I don’t think [Canelo’s] going to fight [Benavidez]. That’s an outright duck. [Benavidez] runs him over like a train.
