For close to two decades, Floyd Mayweather Jr. fought some of the finest names boxing had to offer. He debuted professionally in 1996. But a close perusal of his records reveals that he started taking on one exceptional boxer after the other from the mid of the century’s first decade. But surprisingly, the fighter who gave him the most challenging time never belonged to that era. So who is that person who, according to Mayweather Jr., was the toughest above everyone else?

It turns out the boxer who forced the best out of Floyd Mayweather Jr. was one by the name of Emanuel Augustus. He debuted professionally in 1994 and, after a string of defeats, retired for good in 2011. However, his fighting style gave Augustus a cult status among boxing lovers at the time. He won the IBA Super Lightweight title in 2004.

On October 21, 2000, he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Detroit, Michigan’s Cobo Hall. The non-title bout ended with a technical victory for the latter. Some twelve years later, as per ESPN, Floyd Mayweather Jr. acknowledged Augustus as the most formidable opponent he had ever faced.
