“Mum, This Is for You”: Chris Billam-Smith Dedicates His Victory Over Lawrence Okolie to His Mother “Who’s Got Breast Cancer at the Moment”

Having defeated Lawrence Okolie via majority decision, Chris Billam-Smith is now the new WBO world cruiserweight champion of the world. Following his biggest win in pro boxing, a very emotional Chris Billam-Smith addressed the personal battle he and his family has been fighting. Billam-Smith, who trained his entire life to become a world champion in professional boxing, expressed that his mother is fighting breast cancer and he “was sick in bed all week” before the fight.

Despite the obstacles, with love and support from his well-wishers, Billam-Smith outboxed Lawrence Okolie who entered the ring unbeaten with 19 victories. Having won the fight, the 32-year-old branded the moment as “perfect” and dedicated his win to his beloved mother. “Mum, this is for you, I love you so much,” said Billam-Smith.

After winning the fight Billam-Smith explained how he did not feel like eating ahead of the fight. Although for the same reason making weight became easier for Billam-Smith, the boxer admitted he lacked energy. In this context, Billam-Smith dedicated his latest win to his beloved mother and publicly announced she is fighting breast cancer at the moment. “I was sick in bed all week. I didn’t eat from Tuesday to Thursday. It was easy making weight but I had no energy. I wanna dedicate this to my mum who’s got breast cancer at the moment,” Billam-Smith said.

While still inside the ring, dressed with his scars and embraced by glory, Billam-Smith offered an assessment of his performance against Okolie. While Billam-Smith felt “it wasn’t the most entertaining fight,” he declared he “did enough to win it“. During the bout, Billam-Smith knocked down Okolie multiple times. Speaking about those knockdowns, Billam-Smith explained, “I pictured me dropping Lawrence off with that left hook all week, all camp. That first knockdown was exactly what I’ve envisioned,” added Billam-Smith who was removed from WBC rankings.
