Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is considering potential opponents for his upcoming May fight, and one prominent contender is David Benavidez. In the previous month, David Benavidez secured a victory over Demetrius Andrade, achieving a sixth-round corner stoppage. This win solidified his undefeated record and made him a mandatory contender for Alvarez’s middleweight titles.
Despite ongoing speculation that Canelo is avoiding the 26-year-old Benavidez, the Mexican legend dismissed such claims. Deontay Wilder, amidst his preparation for his upcoming fight against Joseph Parker on December 23rd, has offered his perspective on the matter. Let us delve into it.

Wilder believes that Alvarez may be apprehensive about facing the ‘Mexican Monster’, possibly out of fear or a desire to protect his reputation. “I think Canelo is scared of him. Sometimes it’s like that in boxing, or maybe he don’t wanna lose reputation.” said Wilder. The heavyweight is not unfamiliar with these dynamics where fighters sometimes avoid certain opponents for a multitude of reasons. While Canelo has provided his reasons to not fight Benavidez, the latter is quite vocal about his eagerness to face the Mexican champion.

Wilder shed light on the nature of the sport as a tough and competitive business, where personal attributes like race or ethnicity should not play a role. “If i say i don’t wanna fight a black man, that’s what the headlines would be about. But the same time, when others say certain things, it’s no consequences, no repercussions.” said Wilder. Prior to his trilogy bout with Gennadiy Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena, Alvarez faced allegations suggesting that he was reluctant to engage in fights against fellow Mexican boxers. The fact that Alvarez can choose to not fight another fighter, solely based on ethnicity is something that does not strike right with Wilder.
