It has been nine years since the tragic events that altered the life of Prichard Colón Meléndez forever. During his 2015 fight against Terrel Williams, a fatal injury led to a brain hemorrhage that left Colón in a coma for over 200 days. Although he emerged from the coma, he was left in a vegetative state. According to the latest updates, his ability to speak has yet to return.

But it is important to acknowledge the toll such tragedies take on the loved ones who must endure the aftermath. It is often in times like these that support from others can make a world of difference. In Colón’s case, that support came from Al Haymon. Colón’s mother, Ms. Nieves Colón, expressed her gratitude in a heartfelt tribute to the PBC head, which prompted widespread recognition of his efforts.

Al Haymon’s Generosity and Support

Veteran promoter Lou DiBella commended Al Haymon and his team for their unwavering support. “Had a pretty public business split with Al, but have never stopped respecting him, nor will I stop calling him a friend. Nothing below is shocking if you know/knew him,” said DiBella.

The way they extended support to Prichard Colon and his family exemplifies their decency and integrity. DiBella was responding to Brunch Boxing‘s tweet that featured a message from Nieves Colon. “Ms. Colon says that Haymon has been taking care of Prichard Colon behind the scenes for over 9 years,” read the message.

“I propose to eternally thank a person who, since October 15, 2015, has been in total support of this servant. His name is Mr. Al Haymon,” this is what Ms. Nieves Colon said initially. She recounted how Haymon took immediate steps to ensure her son received the best care, including visiting the hospital, coordinating his discharge, and securing top-quality rehabilitation services at the Shepherd Center.

Beyond medical care, Haymon also provided critical financial assistance. Ms. Nieves Colon said, “Something very serious and important is my financial situation because I quit my job and my own business to dedicate all my time to my son’s therapies. This is very important for these nine years when Prichard’s roof has been in danger due to non-payment. Mr. Haymon has covered the mortgage.“

Thanks to the PBC head, her son was treated with respect and dignity, a reflection of his deep concern and integrity.

While Ms. Colón never communicated directly with Haymon, she expressed immense gratitude to Lamont Jones, Vice President and General Counsel of Haymon Boxing Management, for facilitating consistent communication. She also thanked the rest of Haymon’s staff for their support.
